Five Ways Jesus Revealed Grace

Have you ever noticed that Jesus never said the word grace?

Doesn’t this strike you as odd? After all, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Jesus is grace personified.

So why didn’t he talk about it?

The word grace appears just four times in the gospels and not once does Jesus say it. In contrast, the word law appears hundreds of times, often in connection with Jesus’ preaching.

Paul dedicated his life to the gospel of grace, but Jesus was the greatest law preacher of all time.

Here’s something else Jesus never said to any individual: “I love you.”

Jesus may not have said it but he showed it. His selfless sacrifice on the cross was the greatest demonstration of love the world has ever seen. On the cross, he wrapped his arms around the world and gave us a big “I love you.”

How did Jesus reveal grace?

It is the same with grace. Jesus may not have said it, but he showed it big time. Here are just five ways that Jesus revealed the unmerited favor of a good God.

1. By showing up

Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord… Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.  (Luke 2:10-11, 14)

I have heard people preach this verse as though God was selective with his favor. “Maybe his favor rests on you, maybe it doesn’t. You’d better behave yourself and hope for the best.”

But the angel brought good news of great joy that was for “all the people.”

Are you people? Then God’s favor rests on you!

What does the favor of God look like? It looks exactly like Jesus. God’s favor and God’s Savior are synonymous.

In every Old Testament mention of the promised Savior, we get a hint of grace. Then on the night of his birth we get a shout. “Peace has come to earth!”

As Mary discovered and we’re still learning, we are highly favored. How so? Because the Lord is with us. He is not against us; he is for us and with us. You cannot have the Lord and be anything other than highly favored. He is a magnet to his own favor.

2. By proclaiming the acceptable year of the Lord

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Luke 4:18-19)

I used to think this verse was good news for handicapped people and those living below the poverty line. Then I realized that Jesus is describing all of us.

Compared to God we are all poor and needy. Every one of us is bankrupt of divine life and righteousness. “The whole world is a prisoner of sin” (Gal 3:22).

That’s why Jesus announced the Year of Jubilee. Because of Jesus, we can come home. Our debts are cleared, and we can reap what we haven’t sown.

In the Year of Jubilee all the slaves are freed. Again, that’s us. We were bound but knowing the Truth we are free indeed. That sounds like grace to me.

3. By telling stories about grace

The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for pearls of great price; it is like a treasure hidden in a field. (Matthew 13:44-45)

Jesus preached law to the self-righteous, but ordinary folks got stories of grace. And what stories!

The parables weren’t morality tales for there was no catch or lesson to be learned. The lost coin did nothing to be found. The lost sheep did not rescue itself. The prodigal did not deserve to be received as a son.

Without saying the word grace, Jesus left lasting impressions of unmerited favor. He came for us because in his eyes we are the treasure; we are the pearl of great price. Jesus’ stories leave us, like the prodigal, speechless in the loving arms of our Father.

4. By showing (and preaching) unconditional forgiveness

Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” (Matthew 9:2)

When preaching to those under the law, Jesus made forgiveness conditional. But on the street, Jesus revealed a forgiveness that is unconditional.

The paralytic had forgiven no one yet he was forgiven. It was the same with the sinful woman (Luke 7). It was the same for the whole world when Jesus hung on the cross (Luke 23:34).

If this seems confusing to you, look at the cross. The cross is the dividing line of history and the crossroads of two covenants.

Before the cross it was, “Forgive and you will be forgiven.” But speaking of what would happen as a result of the cross, Jesus also said, “every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men” (Matt 12:31).

When was every sin and blasphemy forgiven? At the cross! Unconditional forgiveness is one of the most liberating manifestations of grace. When you know that you have been completely forgiven, you are free to forgive yourself and others.

5. By preaching faith over flesh

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

Look carefully at the end of that verse. There is a full-stop, a period. Thank God for that period! It is the greatest period in the history of periods. That period declares the scandalous grace of God that will not share the stage with any man.

The old covenant required about a hundred chapters to list all the things you need to do if you were to have any hope of impressing God, but here in the new, you just have to believe. Full-stop.

It’s true that Jesus preached law before the cross to those under the law but that wasn’t his main reason for coming. He came to open blind eyes, set the captives free, and give us new life. All that he asked was that we receive what he wanted to give. This is the only thing Grace will ever ask of you. “Receive.”

Jesus = Grace

There may be no record of Jesus saying, “I love you” but those who met him went away knowing they were dearly loved.

To know his love is to know his grace. They are inseparable. God is gracious because he is love.

Why did Jesus come? He came to reveal the grace of a good God who loves us like a Father. He came to bring us good news of great joy that is for all people.

  8. Great article! I always love reading your posts. I just want to comment that though Jesus may not have said the phrase, “I love you” he may have said it indirectly apart from His actions.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you…” (John 15:9a, NIV)

“…Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:12b, NIV).

I don’t mean to be contentious. Just wanted to point these verses out. Again, great article. I always refer this blog of yours to my friends! Waiting for the next one.

  9. thank you God the father bcoz he give everything which is Jesus Christ…..no worry in the name of Jesus Christ bcoz he lives in us….

  10. Jesus said “My grace is suffficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” “Tout est grace”. All is grace . Grace is everywhere His spirit ministers. Grace is God’s expression of love. It is available everywhere God is and God is everywhere. Grace is not confused by geography or chronology. Grace is provided by the evidence that God exists, loves, saves, heals and desires those whom He loves to come to Him. Grace encourages hope. Grace provides a reason to have faith and hope. JESUS =GRACE. God’s favor rests on me. Favor looks like Jesus. I am highly favored and blessed of the Lord. If you are a child of the King, you have favor and it rests on you both here on earth and forever more.

I was once lost on how to understand “not putting new wine in old wine skins.”…. the story about the rich man who wants to inherit eternal life…. and the full-stop in John 3:16….. just believe…nothing more , nothing less. This blog is grace itself! Thank you so much, Paul.

  14. Believing His word, first yo have to read the right words in the King James Bible. NIV is one of the worst translations and none of them should be read or trusted.

Hi Folks! Great article about the grace of God. Of course He is a God full of Grace and love and this article does well in expressing that type of Grace. What is not discussed here is what is called the “dispensation of Grace” which is of course the instructions and Guidelines that God set forth on how that we in todays Body of Christ Church are to become saved. That is a totally different form of “Grace”. When Jesus walked hHe was dealing with blood relatives of Jacob and those under the mosaic law in other words God said This is how you must be and do in order to prove you love me. Follow the law etc… in the Body of Christ that has changed ore finally been revealed to us and now it says … This is what I did for you to become saved…. WILL YOU BELIEVE? see the difference? yes God is full of Grace and YES He also gave a new instruction set called the Dispensation of Grace with revised and complete instructions… best to you all
    Pastor Dave

  19. Have I really never understood the parable of the pearl of great price? I’ve read that parable for 25 years and thought I knew exactly what it meant. I always thought we were the merchant and that we had to sell everything to acquire the kingdom. I am the pearl of great price? And God sold everything to acquire me?

    • Nick, ultimately it’s a story about love so I think it’s perfectly fine to interpret the story both ways. He loves us and we love him. He happily gave up everything for us and when we realized this we happily give up everything for him. It’s an easy trade. But he is definitely the hero in the story – the Man, the Merchant, so to speak.

    • Nick, I thought the same thing. Awhile back, I saw this truth. Here’s the thing, The Parable of the Treasure Hidden in the Field is about US finding and selling, where the Parable of the Pearl of Great Price is about God being the merchant.

Paul, I absolutely love your blog about grace but there’s a couple verses that have been giving me difficulty in believing the hyper-grace message. I’m not doubting you but I just want clarification on these verses. If I’m correct, John 1:14, 17 describe Jesus as being “full of grace and truth.” I’ve always assumed the word truth here referring to walking in righteousness making reference to the law. We are under grace (full of grace) but we are not to go on sinning (full of truth). Could you shed some light on this?
Let me know if you need more explanation. Thanks!

That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2 verse 7. I am truly enjoying this blog.

  25. Jesus DID mention the Greek word for “grace”, once. This word is Karas. The King James translators inserted the word “thank” in it’s place with “what thank have ye?” Paul’s teachings on grace are NOT Jesus’. Until you fully understand the actual teachings of Jesus, where Paul got his teachings from, you can’t understand Paul. Paul was just a guy..A guy who messed up & disobeyed. Jesus’ commanded our obedience over and over. We continue to ignore Him and go to some modernized “Grace (get out of jail free) Doctrine” that has been grossly misinterpreted over the simple obedience of Jesus’ commandments.

    • Get out of jail free indeed!
Jesus declared freedom for the prisoners (see Luke 4:18&19, above), paid for in full by His blood. That’s grace.
Those in Christ are not on parole. Our release from prison is a done deal and Jesus has done it all.

    • Jesus may not have said the exact word “grace” but He lived grace in all His actions in the gospels. He healed people who were sinners without first requiring that they clean up their act. Only afterwards did He encourage them to go and sin no more. He went to a dinner party with drunk, gluttons and prostitutes. Was He there sermonizing telling them how rotten and dirty they were? The word does not say but the religious onlookers accused Him of sinning by being with them so I doubt He was behaving pious and aloof. 😉 But the clearest case of grace, yes the get out of jail free kind, is what He said in John 3 while talking with Nicodemus. He that believes in me HAS(present tense) eternal/everlasting life. Not based on deeds done, worthiness or lifestyle but based solely upon belief in Him. That is grace straight from the mouth of Jesus in red letters.

  26. Susan, when you study the bible, it is imperative for the sake of clarity to ask yourself 4 questions. 1) Who is speaking? 2) To whom are they speaking? 3) What was the Covenant dispensation at the time? 4) Does this apply to me as a New Covenant born again believer? And you are right, The apostle Paul’s teachings are not the teachings of Jesus because Jesus hadn’t yet shed His blood to ratify the New Covenant of grace. Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi. He was born under the law to redeem those under the law. He was still in the process of fulfilling the law when the 4 gospels were being recorded. We are now in the New Covenant dispensation of Grace. Grace is a get out of jail free message. Jesus said “It IS finished.” The gospel of Grace is the GOOD NEWS. The law is the prison we have been released from by Jesus blood. A FREE gift of righteousness. Our New Covenant began AFTER Jesus’ resurrection.

  27. Thank you for encouragement Paul. I now delight myself in the Lord. Psalm 37:4

  28. To bring the world out of the domain of darkness into the true light. One cannot be perfected through means of the law, only through the blood Jesus Christ perfection is obtained.

It doesn’t worry me that Jesus didn’t mention himself. He is Grace personified, why say it yet he could demonstrate it. Also he is Jesus, Emmanuel, etc,….. words he is never recorded speaking. His lifestyle was “he always came to where there could be need, he identified the need, supplied more than enough for whoever was there to receive (no qualifications whatsoever did he demand first). He is the greatest example of unconditional love. The walking Grace the world has ever known. Ronald Buyungo.

Paul Ellis, I am a full blown Grace Revolution man, 120%. I have fallen under Joseph Prince ministry and each day strive to have a deeper knowledge of grace, and the love of Jesus Christ. I coach soccer at a college in Texas at a school that loves to talk about grace, but grace as a doctrine. Recently the Lord has put on my heart to go to this coaches Bible study, where I have an opportunity to talk about grace (Jesus Christ) in how Paul preached it, and how I have learned it. Idk how to approach the subject because they combat me with the typical “hyper grace” comments. Whats the best way to go about this week to week. Would love to talk to you more, I have read your books, and I love them. Your book Hyper Grace, is absolutely great! Was wondering for some guidance, as I continue to grow, and as I continue to be a shepherd raised in the gospel of Grace.

  37. Jesus awesome god

  38. Grace is the only way by we can do will of god

  39. Yes, Jesus gives us grace and love to those who believe on him scripture says The Lord reigns on the Just and Unjust your article can go left if you don’t explain that we have grace to a certain extent….Jesus told the woman at the well (Go and SIN NO MORE) Grace is the lords way of saying hey I love you I’m giving you a chance to get it right even though we fall short somtimes on a daily basis by God challenges us to REPENT (Change our mind about SIN) and not do it anymore. Jesus preaches Matt chapters 5-7 on how one can enter HELL if they don’t choose to except his free gift of external life that he paid for on the cross he defeated Death in Rose again on the 3rd day your Grace is the time you have until you die in that period you have several chances to live a Holy life before God the best you can “works” will never get us into heaven but the condition of our hearts ♥️ will be shown before Christ. The Bible speaks of judgment Day and so it shall be our Life will speak for us on that day the apostle Paul tells how how to fight SIN and to stay conscious st all times……

  40. I recently heard a sermon about God’s goodness towards others. God’s kind of love for me, others, and the cure for what ails you. I heard that I was loved and that people needed to hear they were beautiful, made in the image of their Father.

I have really learn a lot about grace finding out that Jesus is grace and that John 3:16 is a very important verse learning the period at the end signify that you must believe that these things will come to pass and have faith for it gives you great hope Jesus was a complex person didn’t quit understand about the tent being a cover over a sport to Make it known but also that Jesus did walk the earth in flesh I needed to read this at a low point right now lost of Love one but this give hope, faith, to believe that God does answer prayer.

  42. Awesome..

  43. Paul, I have a question that is a real stumbling block for me, because I have read people saying that “Jesus forgave sins before the crucifixion and resurrection, so how could a cross and resurrection be necessary to forgive sins”, and “In the old testament God forgave sins as far as east is from west before any crucifixion and resurrection.” I don’t know how to answer these things and it causes me doubt and anxiety, which is really difficult. How would you answer this?

    • Bob, this is an excellent question that I address in Chapter 2, “What really happened at the cross?” in my book The Gospel in Twenty Questions. Short version: God could not destroy the prison of sin without destroying the prisoners (us), so he became one of us to destroy it from within. Jesus was the only human born on whom sin had no claim. As a free man, he did what none of us could do. I explain it better in the book.

  44. Five Letters on two words:
    GRACE rocks 😉

    • Not to be cynical.. but isn’t achieving salvation through faith/believing still “earning” salvation? How is salvation then a free gift to all when Jesus says those who don’t believe and baptize will be damned? Are other religions, such as those of Islamic faith, not following what they were told to have faith in as well? Why should they be damned because they don’t believe in the “correct” religion? In addition, how do you counter verses from (I believe it was James but not 100% sure) claiming that faith alone is not enough for salvation? Also, the verse where Jesus states that those who say “Lord, Lord,” will not be turned away if they do not God’s works? I would wholeheartedly get behind the story of Jesus if he died for all, and whether they believed or did his works, would be forgiven of their transgressions. However, when the Bible mentions an eternal fire repeatedly into which individuals (and by that I assume a lot of people..) are cast to suffer endlessly, I cannot help but think the statement “God is all things good” is the greatest oxymoron of all time. Again, I do not post this out of animosity. Rather, I am a scientist who is compelled that a creator exists based upon the intricacy of the world that we live in and the molecular detail of organisms that exist within it. I am an extremely empathetic individual who wants nothing more than to carry out the will of an all good creator and spread his love and kindness to those around me. But the God of the Bible just does not seem like an all good thing to me in anyway and I am left with nothing, because I will never accept that those around me who don’t believe in a book that has no actual proof as the word of God will burn for an eternity. So please dissect this comment, and counter everything I have said (because I want to be wrong!).

      • Hi Brad, I am a scientist too, schooled in the scientific method. I am a fan of precise statements and testable hypotheses. I cannot fully respond to your comment here, so I will make short points that are linked to longer articles.

Faith is simply a positive response to God. It’s receiving the gift he has given and is the very opposite of a work.

Yes, James said faith without works is dead, but he was speaking to a specific audience and he had a specific work in mind. (Hint: it’s the same “work” that Jesus spoke of.)

Jesus did indeed die for all. He did not bear the sins of Christians only, but the sins of the whole world. God holds no one’s sins against them (2 Cor. 5:19).

I do not believe the lost are burned for eternity.

Can I suggest that the oxymoronic God you cannot accept is a caricature of religion. Jesus alone gives us an accurate picture of God’s true character. If it’s not in the Son, it’s not in the Father.

        I hope this helps.

  45. What a great article! Thank you for this. This has given me a key thought for something I am writing — an answer to prayer!

  46. Simply Awesome, thank You Jesus! Thank you Bro. Ellis for saying it so clearly..

  47. Jesus personifies something greater than grace. God is Light, Jesus is Light. Jesus says, “Believe in The Light” and “Be as Children of Light”. But men love darkness rather than LIGHT. Darkness goes to great lengths to divert believers away from the power that can set you free – LIGHT. Interpretation places greater emphasis on grace and law, diverting believers from the truth for when you live in The Light, laws are no longer necessary. But darkness demands utter control over the way people believe. Why? Because when you Live in The Light, darkness no longer has any influence or control in your life. Believe in The Light, holy pure and true, preeminent and preexisting. The Light outshines all other benevolent gifts, for only LIGHT has the power to overcome darkness, and that is all we need to do to make a real difference in our lives, communities, and our world.
