Real Christmas Cards

“Dear eight pound, six ounce, newborn Baby Jesus, in your golden, fleece diapers, with your curled-up, fat, balled-up little fists pawin’ at the air…” ~ Ricky Bobby, Talladega Nights

The first Christmas was heralded by angels praising God for the Savior born in Bethlehem. But today Christmas is marked by cards featuring an old guy with a weight problem. If the King of kings is depicted at all, He’s usually shown as a babe straitjacketed in swaddling clothes. Like Ricky Bobby, the greeting card business prefers a Jesus that is weak and inoffensive.

And what do these cards say about Christmas? Virtually nothing. Years ago “Happy Christmas” morphed into “Happy Holidays.” Now it seems as if the card-writers are in a competition to see who can come up with the dullest and most trite message. Cards that do feature Bible verses look like they were designed to give to your grandmother. They’re boring and make the Word of God look like lifeless.

The original Christmas was marked by angels proclaiming good news to men. “Fear not! We bring news of great joy for all people! A Savior is born!” Christmas means nothing without this good news. Christmas is not just about giving stuff. Christmas is about the Gift that God gave to humanity. Jesus has come, not with vengeance and condemnation, but with grace and truth. From Him we receive one blessing after another.

If you want to restore the meaning of Christmas, then tell someone the good and joyful news of God’s Gift. Send your friends a home-made Christmas card that actually says something. If you can’t make a card of your own, you can use one of the cards below. You’ll find more cards like these on E2R’s Facebook page. Happy Christmas!

  1. In general I like your cards. Though, and I say this with a chuckle, the term “real Christmas” is itself an oxymoron.

  2. Hi, Merry Christmas to all!!! may your joy be full to the overflowing! may all see your light shine as the bright star!!! we should thank the Lord this year and every year for what he has done for us, and out Lord Yeshua!!! It’s very true what you said about the cards and that if you send someone a card with a scripture its looks like to your grandma, but I love it!! i would love to get a card with a scripture, God’s word is powerful and its a two edged sword, so we must stand firm in what we belive no matter who or what comes against us! we also know that in the last days its going to be hard, but the Lord is faithful to those that keep his commandments! So i pray that this year will be special to all of us, and that we can really show the world the true meaning of christmas and that its not just shopiing and getting nice gifs, that even if we werent getting any gift we would be more than satisfied with the gift that God gave us!
We Love you Jesus and thank you for your sacrifice on the cross for our sins!!!
