Happy sixth birthday (and a free book for you!)

6 cake

Escape to Reality is six years old today – hooray! – so this seems like a good opportunity to take a moment to reflect on the past and future of the blog.

Since our last birthday I have published 58 new articles. The most popular was “The 9 lies of religion.” That one was fun to write, but my favorite article was the one entitled, “Is grace a person?” I also enjoyed doing the series on Job. (One day I may write a book about this poor man.)

Who’s reading this stuff?

According to the annual report prepared by WordPress, last year E2R was visited half a million times by readers in 222 countries. Since this blog exists to proclaim the good news of Jesus to the widest possible audience, those numbers are nice.

But the number that really encourages me is this one: 4000. That’s the number of new comments from readers in 2015. If you took to the time to write in, perhaps to encourage, discuss, or ask questions, thanks!

I always enjoy hearing from readers. However, as the blog grows I find it increasingly difficult to respond to comments. So I am particularly grateful to those of you who respond to readers’ questions. There are about 30 people who respond regularly with wisdom and grace. If I tried to name you all I’d miss some, but I will single out the five most prolific commenters and they are Warren, Barry, Chris, Earl, and Colleen. Thank you all!

Stuff you may have missed

Three things you may have missed last year: First, E2R’s Scripture Index grew to more than 1000 scriptures. So if you have a question about a certain verse in the Bible, the chances are increasingly good that you’ll find a grace-based interpretation there.

Second, I put several notes on Facebook that you won’t find here on E2R. These notes tend to be responses to questions readers have asked me such as “Should you tithe?” “Why did Jesus ask for swords?” and “Did the Israelites ask for law?

Third, E2R’s Greatest Hits series was finished. If you’re new here and find the archives overwhelming, you can find the very best articles in a series of books with groovy names like Grace Party and Grace Disco.

What’s coming in 2016?

You may not know this, but I do most of my writing for E2R in concentrated bursts during the school holidays. Over Christmas and New Years I wrote several articles with titles like these:

Is grace a license to be lazy?
How does faith establish the law?
What are heavenly treasures?
The gospel of hope
What is the purpose of the law?
8 signs a church doesn’t get grace
How do I know I’m saved?

You won’t want to miss any of these new articles and the best way to ensure that doesn’t happen is by signing up today as an email subscriber.

Get a free book!

Since it’s our birthday, I want to give away some books. I have 100 copies of the recently released Greatest Hits collection to give away. This ebook contains the entire greatest hits series – all 60 articles along with reflections, follow-up questions, and back-stories – in a single volume.

To get your free copy:

  1. Go to the book website and click on the big red button that says PDF
  2. On the page that opens, click the button that says “I want this”
  3. Copy and paste the following offer code (with no spaces) and the price will drop to $0:

[UPDATE: All free copies have gone. But you can still get all 4 Greatest Hits books for the price of 2.]

Grace is fun! Thanks for sharing the journey.

Paul

I have been looking at E2R and other grace blogs and web sites and I can find anything on the subject I am looking for.
I am looking for anything about “revival” under grace. I see a huge difference of opinion among grace believers and mixture believers as well as between grace believers as well. I don’t have set in stone beliefs about it but it seems to trigger believers of all kinds so if you have anything in writing about it I cant find it.

    • How about Ephesians 2:1 “…you he has revived who were dead in your trespasses…” Simple answer, Christ revives ALL who accept His GRACE.

  4. As one of your half a million viewers from 222 countries in the past year (WOW!!) just wanna say THANK YOU Paul and congratulations E2R! #HappyBirthday 🙂

  5. Happy birthday E2R! And thank you for the great book Paul. You are blessed and a blessing to us. Keep it up. 🍻

  6. Happy Birthday and thanks for blessing me so very much!

  7. Happy Birthday E2R, so blessed by your teachings.

  8. I still remember the first article I read on this website : Faith is a rest. I’m so happy to have found grace based teaching of the bible on E2R. Actually, whenever a scripture feels to contradict the true nature of God, this is the first place I look, and it’s always a blessing. Thank you Paul 🙂

  9. Happy Birthday E2R and Paul! Your site has been so instrumental in helping people find their way out of the dark cavern of religion and into the bright light of God’s grace! Thank you and God bless all you do on and off this site.

    Happy Birthday E2R!!!
Today Feb. 5TH, also happens to be my (oldest of three) son’s birthday (age 27). People with just one or two. . . . .don’t have a CLUE!!!
Blessings multiplied back to Saint PAUL!!!
    Warren (South Carolina, USA)

  11. And now I see that the new logo on the top of the page has a guy walking out of the dark and into the light. Was I subconsciously referring to that in my last comment, because I seriously hadn’t even thought of that till just now!

  12. We are reading The Gospel in Ten Words as a group. This book is such a blessing for all of us. We are already planning our next book and it is The Gospel in Twenty Questions.

  13. Paul
It says sorry it is over for free book. My birthday is Feb 6. Oh well.
Happy birthday to you too from BC, Canada.

  14. Happy birthday. Listening to Andrew Wommack a lot at the moment, and’ hope’ keeps getting flagged up by my inner ear, so I’m very much looking forward to your article on the gospel of hope…. I have a positive expectation of a good beginning, middle and end!! 😉

    • I’ve actually got a whole series coming on hope – it is such a misunderstood word. Biblical hope is far deeper and richer than the common everyday hope we talk about.

  15. I don’t think I have ever submitted a comment but I sure read the posts and enjoy every bit. Happy birthday.

  16. What a great day to celebrate! Happy birthday E2R. You have created something special Paul! The word of Grace that God has given you ( The gospel ) , is being used to set people free! I remember three years ago, I felt so dooped by the church but I began to read your writings. Since then I’ve read all your books. Thankfully I have a heart now to reach the church for Jesus instead of being angry at them. Thank you for your influence in my life. It is great!

  17. Happy birthday to E2R, Paul! Your ministry continues to impact so many lives in the Philippines. Thank you for being a messenger and channel of God’s unending grace!

  18. Paul, My prayer for you on this 6th Birthday of E2R is that you may continue to shine your light on men all around the world with the revelation that God has given you on His grace and His word. May you be a bigger blessing to many more nations and people who seek the truth about God and who desire to have an intimate relationship with Him. Stay blessed!

  19. Awesome, love you bro! Thanks so much for sharing what Christ has blessed you with!

  20. Happy Birthday E2R. I love this site and of course Joseph Prince. The problem I have with both is that there is no fellowship like that at a regular church. I attend a Southern Baptist Church and find it increasingly difficult to attend any classes as these people just don’t get it, grace that is, it’s a mixed grace and it drives me nuts. I’m not very articulate when it comes to getting into discussions with teachers and it’s just uncomfortable. They are great people that are sincere though sincerily wrong. We are told to not forsake the gathering of likeminded believers for a good reason of which I feel part of that reason is lost not having the opportunity to at least meet in various homes or other locations. Anyone else feel the same as I do? It’s frustrating.

  21. Happy Birthday E2R. I love your articles but still struggle to get away from the carrot and the stick when I study scripture on my own :). Years of indoctrination are difficult to overcome as is reading scripture through the grace lens. I have been reading the bible since I was a little girl, was raised in church, and know all the traditional lessons behind the scriptures so it is difficult to unlearn that. But I am learning and am slowly shrugging off the shackles. Thanks to all who post on here. Much love, Colleen

      Colleen,
I understand “years of indoctrination are difficult to overcome” the part I don’t understand is “as is reading scripture through the grace lens.”

I want to grow deeper in my scripture reading by looking / beholding / mediating on it through the lens of grace. Did I misunderstand?

      Blessings,
      Warren (South Carolina, USA)

  22. Thanks for your writings Paul and keep it up

  23. Congratulations God bless you abundantly and give you more wisdom to write many such articles, so that people can be free from the Bondage of religion and know God as he is.

  24. We all celebrate lots of different kinds of birthdays. Personally, I celebrate my belly-button birthday and my sobriety birthday every year. I think it fitting we celebrate a grace-blog birthday, as well. To God be the honor and glory !!! As Frosty the snowman says – HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

  25. Thank you, Paul, for all the wonderful teachings. They have been consistently solid, and there’s not many places I go that I can say that.

I would like to see an article about pride coming from the grace camp. I found grace a few years ago and am just recently learning to tone down my pride when other people don’t see what I see. I now know that I had a bad attitude and was sometimes too argumentative. I don’t have anything that I didn’t receive. If someone is resistant to grace they will not be persuaded by logic, only love. It’s how we act that transforms people around us, not how we preach.

    • Warren (South Carolina, USA) // February 10, 2016 at 8:54 am // Reply

      Good request Bob.
We ALL see it (scripture, you name it) differently. It’s called our own perspective. That’s why we can’t have pride in regards to others seeing it differently that ourselves. The deeper we go in grace however, the more we will see the same, but never “perfectly”. But as looking through a glass dimly. Hence our need for each other’s perspective.
      Blessings,
      Warren (South Carolina, USA)

Happy Birthday E2R! Thank you for your selfless discipline in feeding the world with the beautiful message of Grace. 31. Congrats Paul on the 6th birthday. This site had been a blessing to me for a few years now. I accidentally found this site via google when I was looking for some study on 1 john 1:9.
