Design a New Logo for E2R and Win!

UPDATE: We have a winner! You can see all the entries on the CrowdSpring page. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Short version: I’m running a logo design competition over at CrowdSpring. You don’t have to be an artistic genius to win. If you know what E2R is about and can convey that in a simple logo, you could shape the face of this website. Enter to win a prize of $200!

Longer version: When I started Escape to Reality I cast about for an image that conveyed what the new blog was about and came up with this…

If you’re younger than 40, that’s Steve McQueen from the film The Great Escape. The scene where Steve’s escaping from the Nazis is brilliant – except for one small detail. (You’ll have to watch the film to find out.)

As the blog grew it became apparent that I couldn’t make my mark with a stolen image of a dead actor, so I changed the header to this…

And then this…

As you can see, I was trying to convey the sense of a journey or adventure, the idea that we’re going places in grace. We’re exploring the uplands of God’s favor and freedom.

Another angle I have explored is the idea of breaking out (of dead works) into something bright and exciting (abundant life). You might remember this one:

But as logos go, none of these was very good. They were too detailed and couldn’t be easily put on the back of a book. So what to use?

I returned to the original escape theme. Of course the greatest escape artist of all time is Jesus – he escaped the tomb. That led to this:

That was another idea that looked better in my head than on paper. Eventually I settled on this:

You probably haven’t noticed, but that circle in the middle is meant to represent the open tomb. Pretty cool, huh? But the fact that I had to explain that to you reveals that it’s a poor logo. A good logo stands alone.

Do you have an idea for a logo, something that conveys a sense of escape or adventure or freedom or hope or rest?

If you have some thoughts, I’d love to hear them. If you’re able to sketch them out, even better! It doesn’t have to be perfect – at this stage a rough concept is good enough.

Submit your design over on the CrowdSpring page and you could win a big prize. Not only that, you will shape the face of Escape to Reality!

I look forward to seeing your designs.

Paul

PS: If you have artistic/creative friends, please let them know about the competition. Thanks!

how about: we are walking this temporal world, but IN Daddy’s extradimensionality (outside of time and space, in at least 11 dimensions but way more I’m sure, as DAddy is WAY MORE!) NOW! WOW!…whew, how do u picture that!? Bill Gilham used to write about thinking this: you’re walking one foot high on this earth, but the rest of you is in heaven, seated in the heavenlies now…as a way to practically think as we walk this temporal realm…It’s awesome to think about through this dead human brain but having the NEW MIND within the dead one…whew again…eternal WITHIN the temporal, ENJOY you and HIS LIFE In you..Mike, in Pilot mountain, north carolina

  2. Under 40? Haha, try over 60. I’ll vote for Steve McQueen any day! By the way, I’m not artistic & don’t want an account at CrowdSpring, but how about a butterfly coming out of the cocoon or the Phoenix rising out of the flames. I read that early Christians used the Phoenix as a symbol of the resurrection.

Paul: I have attached an idea for your logo. You are free to use it or modify it in any way you see fit. I do not want the prize money should you decide to use or modify my idea in any way you see fit.

Thank you for your service to believers around the world,

  4. Hi Paul,
Not a logo person – but this intrigued me!! The colours are wrong (should be red) but I am not hugely confident with things like this and did not know how to change it – definitely not going to post it on Crowd Spring lol – but thought I would send you this to see if this could spark further thought. Loads of Love and Blessings to you and Camilla and your amazing children! xxxx

    Greetings Pastor Paul.

I’m not an artist so i can’t even make a sketch.

But I could suggest Hebrews 12:1 which says a cloud of witnesses.

  6. Hi, Paul,
I loved the Steve McQueen logo when I first discovered your site! And I like the biplane! Something about them and then other art you’ve used, revealed what I know to be your unique personality and wit. I do hope you come up with something unique in combination with those who would contribute their ideas. Thanks for all of your writings. You are changing the lives of so many people toward true salvation and grace!

“Something about them and then other art you’ve used, revealed what I know to be your unique personality and wit. I do hope you come up with something unique…” I’m with Sandy on this one. It should reflect who you are as well as what your message is about. Happy hunting 🙂

Hi Paul,I can’t draw for nuts but wondered about burst prison bars bursting outward – looking from inside a grey cell out to green fields/freedom. I thought your empty tomb idea was powerful but maybe it wouldn’t grab those who are not aware of Jesus? Many thanks for a great site – blessings to you all at E2R,Emmie

  8. Hey, Paul, l tried to set up account at crowdspring, but the form kept asking for a different name, so instead I send you here my logo idea -using these images of an eagle freed from “fowlers’s snare”. Against dark sky flying to freedom the light. Combining these would make for a profound image of our freedom, I believe. Love, and many blessings on your new logo creation! Lynn >> >> Escape to Realty Logo idea – use this eagle with the broken trap straps, put in place of the dove in its picture, with some added sunbeam rays added behind the eagle, with Ps 124:7 verse reference on the bottom right, or perhaps the whole verse in white font against the black sky on the left bottom of the logo… >> >> >> >> >> >> “We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.” Ps 124:7 >> >>>

Yes I think I have a good Design that can describe Escape to Reality. Acts 9: 23-26. When Saul was persecuting Christians they had a way of evading him. Saul did not know that there was a hole through which Christians were let down through a basket. When it was himself turn to be persecuted same Christian led him and made him escape the Jews through the same hole with a basket. They told him that that was how they escaped to real freedom when he was tormenting them. Through that hole and basket believers experienced reality of freedom without any effort of theirs. It was arranged by others. He was only to enter into the basket and lifted up and he just finds himself the other side of freedom. It was still a mystery to others how christians were able to escape. At the other end of the wall it was like a dream come true . A puzzle but it is real. At the side of the Wall the Christian runs away with confidence and without fear. Most Rev. Moses O. KATTEY

1 Samuel 19:12-14 where David was let down through a window to escape.

Hello And thank you for this creative design contest. To explain my design I am goingbto reference your invite email to me. The second last photo in it of the empty tomb was my inspiration. The steps can be seen on the bottom of “E” of my design and the #2 and letter “R” have the curves of the stone and the exit. One last idea was to somehow make sunlight in between the 2 and R curves but I lack capability. So I used the dominate colors of your webpage for the color choice. Anyways good luck and fun to you in this contest. Hope you understand all I was trying to communicate wbout the logo.

I don’t have a smartphone or any social media stuff (and I’m not 96 years old) so I couldn’t do crowdspring, fb or anything so I’m trying it this way. 8f this doesn’t work let me know because I honestly think you might like my logo design.

  14. Hello Paul, Does someone have to submit their proposed logo via cloudspring? I haven’t done any other designs yet and I can see they require samples…
    Blessings, Edith

    • You do if you wish to be in the running for the prize. Yes, I have learned that they require samples. I did not know about this before the competition started, but I know some readers have responded by making logo samples so they can enter. Others have decided to send me their logos personally via FB.

  15. Paul,
I didn’t see a deadline listed so hopefully you’ll keep this open until you find something you like. If you can hold out until early to mid June my son may be able to help you. He’s a student at the Savannah College of Art & Design and quite gifted with graphic design, motion media, and film. His logo work and other branding and promotional projects have helped and been used by many. Consumed at the moment by his final projects at SCAD, he wouldn’t be able to devote any time to your logo until he completes his term there June 1, but afterward may express interest and be of use to you. Though young, he may bring a fresh and useful perspective that you may not have considered to this point. His website is mindofzach.com if you wish to see a sampling of some of his “fun” work. Love from the U.S.!
    Gregg
