  6. Matthew 24:42-44 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

You follow Me!” Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

    • Thanks Brandon. Some of those scriptures refer to Christ’s final coming (and I will add them to the list above), but some refer to his other comings – such as his coming on the clouds to the Ancient of Days (Matt 23:39, 24:30, 26:64, Mark 13:26, 14:61, Rev 1:7). If you’re curious, I have written articles on most of these scriptures and you can find them in the Archives>Scripture Index.

  2. You are quite welcome. 🙂

John 6:39,40,44,54 (NKJV) “This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” . . . . . 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. . . . 54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Does it mean that our Lord Jesus Christ is coming twice, first as a Saviour, and second as a warrior/judge?

  4. Paul…looking forward to your updated list. Thank-you for this as so many have strayed into thinking “that” day has already come.

  5. Paul, Just to clarify have you concluded that all these “second comings” listed are future? For the last few years it has been my understanding that most of the “comings” described by the New Testament writers (but not all) referred to the time of the destruction of Jerusalem, especially in the Book of Revelation where He is described as coming “quickly.” In other words the understanding of the early Christians based particularly on Matthew chapter 24 was that the destruction of Jerusalem was the next major event on God’s calendar and that they anticipated that the destruction of Jerusalem would bring an end to their terrible persecution by the Jews.

Paul, I took a quick look at the list and noticed that the NASB adds the words “of sin” to Acts 3:19-21 so that it reads “Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away”. It is my understanding that there is no Greek text to support the words “of your sin”. The King James translates the verse as: “19 Repent (change your mind) ye therefore, and be converted (believe), that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” It is up to you, but I would recommend using a more accurate translation than the NASB.

Just noticed that Acts 3:19-21 was taken from the NLT not the NASB. That translation totally distorts the meaning of repentance in the original text.

    Paul,
So what does this mean? Is there a “rapture?” Is there a great tribulation? Is there a great falling away or a great revival? How will it all play out? I am confused. I will definitely get your new book “AD 70.” Love to hear your thoughts.
    Sincerely, Mark

    • I have a chapter on the rapture in the new book. Update: I now have several articles on the rapture and great tribulation here on E2R. Find them using the search box above. Thanks.

  9. Awesome, I like your articles, clear enough to understand.
I cannot wait for you to explore the words of John in revelations, I want to know about the 7 judgments, the seven years(split into half, 3 and half years and the second half 3 and half years) enlightening me where it fits on the past tribulation, if it is still in the future what will these events be since the Great Tribulation has passed. Also since Jesus is coming permanently on Earth where does this 1000 year Rule of Christ fits(the millennial Kingdom). After understanding this, then I will be well settled..Thank You.

Thank you for this list. I appreciate your work.

  11. Is theyr anything scriptural that suggests that HE wouldn’t return again until his second coming? Meaning any appearances on the earth after his ascension into heaven

  12. David J Patrick // August 27, 2018 at 1:39 pm // Reply

It is the truth on which Christianity stands. Both the advents of Christ are equally important. Just like all prophecies concerning Christ were literally fulfilled, whether His birth, the timing, the manner, the place. His life, His power, His humility His teachings His suffering. His arrest, accusation, His being condemned to death, His burial and resurrection.
Similarly every prediction of His glorious and essential second coming will be fulfilled.
I thank God for the opportunity I had to to hear and believe the full reality of the 1st coming of Christ about which Apostle Paul says, ” This is a faithful saying and worthy of all expectation that Christ came into the world to save sinners. Of whom I am chief.” Having believed in the sacrificial death of Christ Jesus, I’m looking forward to His second coming with joy.
Prayerfully hope God would open the eyes of many to hear and believe in what Christ has done and what He is going to do.

  13. All the verses it seems that Jesus came already?

Hi Paul. Do you believe that 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8 is speaking of a future coming or a past fulfillment? I have read your book 70 A.D. and you only briefly mention 2 Thessalonians 2 in your footnotes to clarify that you do not believe John Levi nor Simon were the “man of lawlessness”. If you believe this is still a future event, what would in your opinion be this “falling away”? Would this not put a rather negative spin on our hopes for the future (before Jesus comes back)?

    • Hi Leandra, it seems plain to me that Paul is speaking of the Lord’s final return to earth. I know preterists will disagree for three reasons: (1) Paul speaks of “our” being gathered to the Lord at his final coming (2 Thess 2:1) suggesting that the Thessalonians would be alive to see it, (2) Paul said the man of lawlessness would sit in the temple (2 Thess 2:4), and the temple did not exist after AD70, and (3) the Thessalonians had been unsettled by false message that the final coming had taken place, suggesting they were expecting an imminent return. However, there are other perfectly reasonable interpretations for these passages and preterism cannot account for two things that have not yet happened, namely a bodily resurrection of the dead and a rapture of the living.

Paul paints a rather graphic picture of the Lord’s return without specifying when. And that makes sense. If Jesus did not know the hour or day of his return, it’s hard to believe that Paul did.

Regarding the man of lawlessness, there are at least two different ways to interpret Paul’s words, but no way to reach a definitive conclusion. My view is that Paul is quoting Daniel’s prophecy and not much more. His larger point, however, is pretty clear: “Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him. We ask you not to become easily unsettled or alarmed…”

      • Thanks for your reply. Yes I’ve seen those interpretations from (partial) preterists too. I think they see the “gathering together” the same as the “gathering of the elect” Jesus spoke about in Matthew 24. (Different to the final coming).
If this is still future though, would this not support the typical evangelical “doom and gloom” futuristic outlook? (Massive rebellion, evil one coming to claim they are God). I’m leaning towards seeing the “lawless one” as Satan, with him being revealed at Jesus’ coming. However, it’s hard not to read the passage and not see the “falling away” as referring to the first century jewish apostasy.

    Hi Paul =) Merry Christmas!
How about 1Cor 15:51-55 too? I know “the Day” per se isn’t mentioned there, but it sure is encouraging about the goodies we will get on that Day! =)

Thank you Paul for taking the time to gather all these scriptures from the New Testament that talk about the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus. I appreciate it very much! By the way, you mentioned preterism, so what is your view on futurism? Do you know how these two schools of interpreting Bible prophecy came about and when and by whom?

  17. I think that 2Peter 3:3-4 fits you perfectly.
There are none so blind as those who simply will not see.
    Jesus Christ IS coming soon.
Scripture tells us exactly what the conditions in the earth will be when He does. And that’s exactly what this planet looks like. And it’s never looked like this before. Ever.

I understand the damage that’s been done by end time fanatics, believe me I do. but the harm you are doing by trying to convince people That He may not is going to cause people to stop watching. And He clearly demands is in Mark 13 to not be found sleeping upon His return. “What I say to you I say to All… WATCH.

    • You may be interested in my article, “Is Jesus coming soon?

    • The earth has looked like this plenty of times. World war 1 World War Two. The Great Depression, the Spanish flu storms and earthquakes….and things that were not even recorded by historians even before that. The list goes on and on and on. The biggest issue now is we have social media and instant news.

    • Also stop watching what exactly. None know of the time of his return and why do I need to concern myself as a Christian of it? If I am living by the law of grace and resting in his finished work then what am I watching for exactly and what exactly does YOURE version of watching entail? If I’m getting what you’re saying correctly if I’m not “watching” then I am doing something wrong. If I am confident in the foundation in Jesus Christ then I don’t care about what’s going around me in the world today. John 16:33 tells me to be of good cheer and why because Jesus has already won the battle and overcome the world. You make it sound like I’m sinning and not watching, but my heart is always on “watch”. It just not be the same as yours.
