Hi paul I just wanted to ask could you be so kind to tell me in Romans when it says God will repay each person according to what they have done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism. (Romans 2:6–11) what does it mean when it says God will repay each person according to what they have done? 🙂
I plan to do a post on that scripture one of these days. Please bear with me.

I love you bro. Seriously you have no idea the blessing your website has been to me. One day we will meet (in heaven for sure) and when we do I am going to seriously bear hug you! I feel like I’m born again…again! I was born from above in a Jesus Christ at age 20 in room 712 in the 63rd street YMCA IN New York City. Over the next 30 years I would gradually fall from grace. This past Winter was extremely difficult for me (health-wise and depression) and Hallelujah! In the midst of it all The Holy Spirit comforted me and led me sweetly by the hand back to my Daddy’s love. My first love. He led me to your web site where the true gospel (the good news of grace!) was clearly crystallized for the very first time since being saved. Hey, Joe! I’ve been a believer for 33 years. I was saved at Calvary Chapel with Chuck Smith. I thought I knew grace. I didn’t totally until this weekend due to God leading me to Paul’s website. I had asked Him to tell me the truth. I was tired of the spin from both sides of the political spectrum. God did that in a very supernatural way. I think He’s doing that with a lot of us and getting us ready for a revival that will brings millions, perhaps billions to faith and joy in the real gospel.
hi paul could you help me to understand in Romans when it says god will repay each according to what he has done because it makes it sound to me like there trying to say god will judge you then send you to hell if you have not lived a life of good works and doing good day in and day out even with Faith and to me that would lead to a work your way into heaven type thing.

Since Paul hasnt had time to do a post on this yet I’ll try to answer your question. We are not saved by our works, it is a gift of God. (Eph. 2:8-9)
Jesus promises “most assuredly” that we (believers) do not come into judgment. (John 5:24) and there is no condemnation for those in Christ. (Rom.8:1) However Jesus does say that we will
receive rewards according to our works.. (Matt 16:27 & Rev.22:12)
We will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ to receive what was done in the body, whether good or bad..(2 Cor.5:10)
Our works will be tried by fire to receive rewards or losses, but we are still saved..(1 Cor.3:11-15) I hope that helps answer your question.

This is a comment for Angela Bolton who asked about Matt.7:21-23. Paul Ellis answered and said that this is not referring to believers. He’s absolutely right but I want to expand on this a little further. If you start reading at Matt. 7:15 you will see that Jesus is talking about the false prophets (the wolves in sheep’s clothing) who have not done the will of the Father. The will of the Father is to believe in the Son. (John 6:40) I have heard many pastors use these verses to frighten the flock and it sickens me. I once heard a TV preacher say “see, these verses prove that even perfect Christians can still end up in hell”!!! Really?? (I feel sorry for those sitting in his church.) There are NO perfect Christians. Jesus is the only one who was perfect without sin and that’s why we’re only made perfect through Him. Its all about context and unfortunately too many preachers take scripture out of context with disastrous results! Angela I hope this helps ease your mind, and thank you Paul for letting me respond.

Paul, I too have been reading Michael Brown’s blog for the last several months. I do hope one day he will understand the gospel. He understands that Calvinism is not the way, but he still doesn’t realize he is preaching a works based salvation. I knew what he was saying wasn’t kosher–pun intended– and I did have to stop reading his blog at times, but it took your blog here to show me what I had been missing and what he still fails to comprehend. I pray God will reach Michael, as he does have a major impact on so many evangelicals here in the U.S. And he really believes just as past Pharisees before him that he is defending God. I do see why so many evangelicals follow him. He is well learned and read and does usually come over as a gracious disciple of Christ. But he is still a prisoner of works in my opinion. I hadn’t read Michael’s blog for quite some time–but, strangely after reading your blogs about grace and when I googled 1 John and grace–his article about you popped up. Talk about timing 🙂 I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe they are Godincidences 🙂
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to respond. It’s understandable that people have questions about this stuff. I’m an advid proponent of the Gospel aka Good News, so it’s not that I’m ever trying to debunk grace preachers. In fact I’ve got several books from one of my all time favs, Joseph Prince. Now I have questions and have been praying for clarity on the subject of God removing His hand of protection from America from falling away from our Christian principles. This is a major discussion right now among several very respectable modern day prophets who are having repeated visions and dreams on the subject. This brings me right back to the subject of grace and America not following Gods law. If He He is removing His hand of protection then basically we are under judgement. The catch here …is it America, Christians or unbelievers coming under judgement or all of us? If it is just for those outside of Christ, then we Christians are being punished alongsside unbelievers because Tsunamis and the like cover large masses and don’t skip over certain people. Hi paul love your website I just had something I wanted to ask in Revelation 22:14 it says Blessed are those who do His Commandments that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter trough the gates into the city now I don’t think they are talking about the 10 commandments here so are they talking about Jesus’s Commandments and also this has put a lot of fear in me because I was reading in 1John 3:22 where it says And whatever we ask we receive from him because we keep His Commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is His Commandment that we should believe on the name of His son Jesus Christ and love one another as He gave us Commandment. now because in Revelation it says those who do His Commandments with a S at the end meaning more then one commandment that makes me feel that faith and trust in Jesus is not enough to save you because of what the bible says. so now I feel that even though I trust in jesus and put all my faith in him that if I fail to love people and don’t love people enough and fail to do things like the lords supper as many do it today and so on that there’s just no hope so any light you could shed on this would sure be a big big help.
If you think you can impress God with your commandment-keeping, you know something’s wrong, right? We stand by grace alone. To me, this passage is speaking of the blessings of obedience and true obedience is now found in following rules from either the New Testament or the Old; true obedience is a fruit of love. Turn that passage upside-down and it describes Adam perfectly. He didn’t trust the Lord so didn’t obey him and cursed himself as a result. In contrast, we do trust the Lord, we do obey him, and as a result we are blessed.

hey paul just wanted to ask is is water baptism a requirement for salvation and I have hear a lot of people say that you have to confess jesus in front of a lot of people that you cant do it in your home or nothing or your not saved why do they teach that ?
Paul – I have been struggling to both forgive and hold accountable my father who abused me sexually, sadistically, etc. for years. Is that even possible…or…do I have to choose between forgiveness and holding him accountable through the legal/justice system?
I notice in your subject index there isn`t anything that refers to,election,predestination,foreknowledge or man`s free will to accept or reject God`s forgiveness and free gift of eternal life which is in Jesus,I`d like to hear your opinion.

Hello I just read your article on repentance and have really been struggling with this concept I grew up learning repent means turn from sin to Jesus,but I can’t see how that’s not adding works to faith. You say it just means to change your mind, can you explain this to me
In 2 Corinthians 12 Paul talks about sin and repentance. In v.20 they are still sinning and in v.21 they “have not repented”. Paul uses the terms interchangeably. It would make no sense at all if in v.21 he meant that they had changed their mind about sin but were still regularly practicing it.
Same thing in revelations 9:20-21, it would seem odd that the Lord would just want a mental resolve not a behavioral change
20The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.
Please if you could explain this it would really be helpful.
I didn’t say it – it’s what the word actually means. Right living follows right believing. The Corinthians hadn’t repented and sin was the fruit. This grieved Paul.
Hi paul you know i use to like Andrew Womamacks website and i know you talk about him but after reading a post he put up i was shocked and i can no longer follow him he put that Colossians 1:23 teaches It’s our faith in what Jesus did for us that saved us, and our faith must continue to be in Christ, not in ourselves, to maintain salvation. Our holiness, righteousness, and justification are gifts that we receive in our spirits through Jesus. These things are not irrevocable. We can’t lose our salvation through not being good enough, but we can reject it. We weren’t forced to be saved, and the Lord won’t force us to stay saved. We have to hold on to faith in Christ as our only hope of salvation when i seen this i almost puked them he went on to say eternal salvation, for although we do experience salvation here and now, we have to hold fast that profession unto the end. This is not saying that our eternal salvation is something that we cannot be assured of (2Pe 1:10). Our salvation is secure as long as we want it to be secure, but it must be maintained by faith (1Pe 1:5). and i just cant accpt that im sorry but i didnt know if you knew he viewed Salvation like this ?
I don’t know one other person who holds to 100% of my views, and that’s to be expected since none of us has it all figured out. You shouldn’t accept any teaching that doesn’t resonate in your spirit, but don’t reject the man.

hi Paul, What is your stand in “all are forgiven, even those who don’t believe, but not all are righteous”? I hear it with some grace preachers. And i believe the divine exchange is one event for both forgiveness and gift of righteousness. It is not an installment thing. You can’t have one without the other.
I would say all are forgiven (meaning, Jesus carried the sins of the whole world; sin is no longer the problem), but not all have received his forgiveness (meaning, some hold onto their sin, even though the Lord is no longer counting our sins against us). There is a giving aspect (done already) and a receiving aspect. The grace of God has been given to all, but not all have received it. More here.
Dr Kenneth Hagin used to say there is a Godward and a manward side to every victory…

And by the way, there were 2 questions that an atheist friend asked me a couple days ago that I wasn’t able to answer:
1. Why did God allow “free will” to Adam and Eve if He already knew beforehand that this “free will” will let humanity to sin? One example he gave me was during Hitler’s Nazi regime, where his free will caused millions of people (Jews) to be killed.
2. Why did God kill people in Noah’s ark’s story and then later on came up with a command (Law) “Thou shall not kill.”? That seems contradicting to my friend.
Hope you could shed some light on these, Paul. Any response will be highly appreciated.

I believe in jesus but i find life boring and meaningless.
Also i do not like reading the old testament because its depressing. Also i have trouble with the synoptic gospels contrasted with the book of john and romans etc..
If salvation id by grace, why does matthew mark and luke not mention it at all? THEY ARE NOTHING like the book of john. The first three books seem to present a works based gospel of cutying off ur hands plucking out your eyes, loving thine enemies, walking twaine, and doing all manner of good deeds like not despising one of those “little ones” etc but it is devoid of grace.
If i were to have read the bible from book of john onwards i would have few issues with understanding, but those 3 books seem to contradict grace left and right and at the same time they never say its by grace which makes it worse. What if i only had the book of matthew as it was written? I would never come to the conclusion that whosoever will… How do you reconcile these things?
Like this. I love all the books of the Bible, but Lamentations I’m not so sure about.

Good moring Paul (at least from Alaska’s time zone), I am wondering if you could speak on baptism, I want to be baptized. In speaking with a friend/co-worker a Christian, who advised me to ask myself and be clear on why I want to be baptized, that it is something not to take lightly. In researching I get there is some conflicting information. One I can do it at home provided it is with another baptised saved Christian. Catholicism says we have to take classes or study for baptism. In googling baptism, one indication is that it is not necessary because, one we are baptised in the fluid before we come out of the womb, hence baptised in the water, two baptism for a born again Christian is in the spirit. There is so much information and confliction in the finding an answer. The bible talks about Jesus saying,
“Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” I would appreciate your advise.
Jesus was baptized. First-century believers were baptized. I was baptized and I have baptized many people. Why do it? We are identifying with Christ’s death and resurrection. We are putting Galatians 2:20 into action. It’s an outward act that reflects an inward faith. If you have a conviction about it, do it, but my view is “why wait?” If you want to take a class, take a class. If you want to get baptized this afternoon, get baptized this afternoon.

Paul, Your blog is the one that I always read right away when I get the email notice of a new entry. I have read several of your books and have benefited greatly. If you are ever looking for an idea to write about in your blog, you would likely have some useful insights on the narrative of Simon the magician in Acts 8:9-24. It says that Simon believed and was baptized but then he said something really dumb that resulted in Peter saying a curse to Simon. Peter told Simon to repent and beg that God perhaps forgive him of the wicked thought of his heart. Simon instead asked Peter to intercede for him. So, okay, I have believed and was baptized. I have had, from time to time, some pretty wicked thoughts in my heart. I would guess my heart is not always perfect before God. Maybe I have even been bitter toward someone. Do I have to repent and beg God to perhaps forgive me? I thought I was already forgiven. Thanks for your consideration.

hey, I have been reading your book “the Gospel in ten Words” and it has been and interesting read. As I have been reading one question has been eating away at me. Where do you find assurance of salvation for the Christian? For me it is in the promise of baptism that Paul talks about in Romans 6 (in baptism we are buried and raised to life in Christ.) Do you view baptism in this way?

Is it really scriptural for Christians not to like one another? Are we not perceiving them incorrectly if we say we don’t like them but “love them with the love of the Lord”.
Hi Paul, I have just been reading a commentary on 1 Cor 3:9-15 . Since I have been introduced to your website I can’t accept the interpretation I have just read. That Christians will first be judged by fire to burn away all works that are temporal so that we can be rewarded for what is left, i.e we will be judged for our works. I have tried to understand the passage through the lens of grace as you have recommended but still can’t get what this passage is saying to me, if not judgement.

As a point of reference, I bought 50 of your “The Gospel in Ten Words” book when it first came out. It helped my weekly Bible class (in which I also use Joseph Prince’s first Devotional as a principle reference.)
You might like to know that my (fourth) book, “Is There An Elephant In YOUR Church?” is in print on Amazon (and on Kindle for $.99 but needs some updating). It is really 3 books in one. In the spring of 2010, I asked the Lord why there is still so much legalism in the Body after 2000 years. The answers gleaned over four years of research into the Bible and church history took me back to the roots of division in the infant church that I never suspected and never heard taught. It is Big Picture thinking that clears up a lot of the confusion that has caused division and defeat in the Body for 2000 years.
For starters, Gentiles were never given the Mosaic Covenant (which covers 82% of the Bible -up) so why is that being mixed with the New Covenant for believers today? It is mixing Judaism with Christianity which is no gospel at all – to use Paul’s clear distinction in Galatians etc.
Secondly, Jesus revealed His WHOLE Gospel to Paul directly (in about 42 AD – do the math in 2 Cor 12:1-6) which describes Jesus’ Finished Work of His Divine Exchange with believers. However, by and large, the church has been focusing on the 4 Gospels as the CENTRAL Gospel instead. But there is a mixture of law with grace, depending on who Jesus was speaking to, and those books were written years after most of Paul’s books that he recieved directly from Jesus – and which Peter regarded as “the scripures.”
Thirdly, the revelation that we are tri-part beings was declared a heresy by the R. C. church in 1311 and that has negatively influenced even the Protestant world to this day. Luther defended the tri-part revelation from Jesus to Paul but most denominations still stay tied to the confusion that bi-part brings. I devote 2 chapters in my book to set the record straight – historically and spiritually.
All scripture is inspired by God. BUT the terms of the 5 main covenants are different – and that makes all the difference. The Mosaic Covenant was not unilateral, unconditional and eternal like ours is, thanks to Jesus. There is much more in the book – 22,000 words worth – which provides much food for thought and discussion.

i’m looking forward a master of thology degre in a gospel of the grace.
Paul, I have been troubled about sexual sin and would like some advise, as I have attempted to rebuke this type of behavior. It started with molestation when I was 12, being impacted by relatives who used to fornicate in our home (not with me) while intoxicated. So there were many influences in this area. I have been saved for many years, but did not realize what that meant to me until recently. I have struggled with this, praying and asking God to take this from me, it seems when I make up mind to repent from this behavior I get tempted. It is powerful and scares me that I will lose salvation. I do try but I am not perfect in my resolve.
I don’t know anyone who is perfect in their resolve, except maybe a few dieters. Saying no to sin is the wrong way to proceed. It’s betting on your will-power. There’s a post on E2R’s Facebook page today about addictions and habits that might help, and check out the discussion under this one.

Will you please recommend a Christian church in Tacoma/Olympia/Seattle area that is compatible with what you have been teaching? I especially appreciated your explanation of the NIV confusion between the “flesh” versus the “sin nature”. I have been part of two churches in my life, neither of which taught “Grace” correctly. I have been considering the “Local Church” in Tacoma because I agree with “The Normal Christian Life”, but they don’t respond to me as I have tried to contact them several times. I have prayed about it but I have gotten no guidance…and so I have been on my own for more than 10 years…which is tough.

Paul, please can you provide a New Covenant view on fasting, touching on Acts 13:3, 14:23 and 27:9 but particularly in Matthew when Jesus said “when the bridegroom is gone, then you will fast”.
I understand faith righteousness, but had a discussion last night where someone said that fasting helps them to hear God more clearly. I’m not sure I understand as when I hear God it’s not in half sentences or muffled so I can’t hear properly. God speaks all it on the basis of my performance but on……(you know the deal) 🙂

I don’t have strong views. If fasting helps you hear, then have the freedom to fast. If fasting puts you under a yoke, then don’t. “All things are lawful but not everything is helpful.”

I’ve just finished writing a book, “The Contradiction of God : Why Everything You Thought You Knew About God is Wrong” , that may be of some interest to you. It is an examination of the the well-known words of God through the prophet Isaiah, “My thoughts are not your thoughts”. Instead of defining His thoughts as what they “are”, like the rest of us do, apparently God finds it more illuminating to simply define them as what they “are not”. And what are His thoughts “not”?
Astonishingly, Isaiah declares in no uncertain terms, that they are simply “not your thoughts”. And not by just a little, here and there, now and again, but apparently, “My thoughts are not your thoughts”, every time and everywhere, without exception, by an immeasurable difference, “as high as the heavens are above the earth” according to His very Own unimpeachable Self-Expert testimony. And that utterly contradictory thought, if you really think about it, simply changes every other thought about His thoughts. In fact, if that is not your ground-zero hermeneutic, you are guaranteed, without exception, to wind up precisely as far from His thoughts “as the heavens are above the earth”.
That’s why, after Peter contradicts Jesus, Jesus turns and says to His disciples, “If any man would come after me, let him ‘utterly contradict’ himself, take up his cross and follow me”. Moses had stood on the mountain and cried, “Choose life!” Jesus now stands in the desert and cries, “Choose death!” Take up your cross, not your crown, and follow me. That’s the contradiction of God: not you contradicting Him, but rather, His strict and stringent requirement that, if you would follow Him, you must “utterly contradict yourself”. Crosses are borne only in utter contradiction.
“My thoughts are not your thoughts,” declares the only real Expert in the room. At least, that’s the way God tells it. You, of course, may disagree. Apparently, most people do. Love in Christ, Danny
Dear Paul, I love the regular digest from E2R into my email but also your books – I have all of them. It is a vital area I am gradually changing in. I now have to commute (driving) each day for a long time. Have you recorded any of your material so that I can listen to it as opposed to read it please, and if not, can you recommend someone else who has done so, whose teaching is akin to yours? Bless you.
