What is Truth in An Age of Many Truths?
When you’ve left but you haven’t arrived

We are living in a time of great awakening. All over the world, religious blinders are falling off those who have been kept in bondage. A church dulled by toxic mixture is waking up to the realities of the new creation.
In short, people are thinking for themselves, and this is a very good thing.
It’s an awakening that, for many, begins by asking questions. Why do I think this way? What does the Bible really say? Is it possible I have allowed myself to be misled?
When we open our minds to the Spirit’s revelation, we become primed for transformation. If all goes well, the result is repentance – a radical change in mindset that leads us in a new and better direction.
But it doesn’t always happen. Deconstruction should lead to reconstruction, but sometimes it just leads to rubble.
You took apart your faith. Now what?
I have seen countless people come out of Egypt only to settle in the wilderness. They’ve left, but they haven’t arrived. They’ve abandoned religion, but they haven’t embraced truth. Some have decided there is no truth or there are many truths, which is the same thing. Which reminds me of something GK Chesterton said:
Merely having an open mind is nothing. The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.
It is good to discard the lies, but we must never abandon our quest for truth. So for those who are in transition, here is a reminder:
Truth is in Jesus. (Ephesians 4:21)
Truth is not a manmade construct subject to revision and debate. Truth is in Jesus, which is to say that Jesus is the measure of all things and by him all things are known (1 Cor. 8:6, Col. 1:16). Everything must be interpreted through him.
Loins girded with truth
If you want to know the truth about yourself, the world, or the meaning of life, you will find it in Jesus. The truth that is in Jesus frees us from the illusions of this flawed and fallen world (John 8:32).
Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth (Ephesians 6:14)
To be girded with truth is to interpret all things through the reality of Jesus Christ. It is being renewed in the spirit of your mind and refusing to conform to the broken reality of this evil age.
Truth is the first piece of spiritual armor listed in Ephesians 6 because truth is a belt on which everything else hangs. If the enemy can deceive you or somehow distract you from the truth, your other armor won’t matter.
The devil will attack your grasp on truth by assailing you with lies—“Did God really say?”—and by telling you there is no truth—“There are many truths. There is your truth and my truth.” He will try to untie your belt of truth by glorifying doubt and uncertainty. The best response to his schemes is to take his lying thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5).
Of course, straying from the truth is nothing new. Something like this happened in the church at Antioch when certain men from the circumcision party arrived and started preaching law. They misled Peter and Barnabas and might have done terrible damage, but Paul wasn’t afraid to speak up:
I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel (Galatians 2:14)
“Not straightforward” means they weren’t walking straight. They weren’t acting consistently with the revelation of grace. They were basically saying, “You are not good enough for God. To join the inner circle, you need to become more Jewish.”
A similar message is sometimes heard today. “To be a real Christian, you need to step up, count the cost, and make the sacrifice. To really shine, you must be in full-time ministry or on the mission field.”
These calls for blood and sweat lead to dead works and Christians operating outside of their unique giftings.
And then there is the other version. “To experience authentic Christianity, you need to throw out everything you’ve been taught about God, abandon the ‘box church,’ and scorn anyone who calls themselves a pastor.” Which is really just law with a new label. Graceless messages of this kind are far from the heart of Christ.
Who hindered you from obeying the truth?
If you would stay girded with truth, learn to ignore those who aren’t living in accordance with the truth of the gospel.
We did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you. (Galatians 2:5)
The truth of the gospel, or the word of truth, is the good news about Jesus Christ the Living Word. It is the undistorted message of Christ (Gal. 1:7). So here are three questions to ask yourself that will determine whether you are standing firm with your loins girded by truth:
- Does the message I’m hearing inspire me to trust God more?
- Does it cause me to fix my eyes on Jesus and be led by his Spirit?
- Does it encourage me to walk in his grace?
If you answer yes to these questions, you can be confident that you are well girded with truth.
