His opinion is factually wrong. Sin is destructive – no grace preacher would say otherwise. We say further that where sin abounds, grace super abounds. No matter how great your sin, God’s grace is greater still. We are not diminishing sin; we are exalting Jesus is bore our sin.
Just read How Well Did I Understand Grace Before I Understood Grace. Like you, I always knew about grace, but didn’t know Grace. Thank you for this wonderful site. I am learning so much, and it’s opening up studying the Word like I’ve never experienced before. The thing I’m stuck on right now that I can’t find an answer to is why do the gospels never record Jesus talking about grace? Luke mentions it as Jesus having the grace of God upon Him when He was growing up, John mentions grace three times in chapter 1 in the way I am coming to understand grace, but none of them have Jesus saying anything about grace. Why?

Paul, I am going through a broken time in my life having just gone through another divorce. I have served in ministry most of my life and usually the one with an encouraging positive word for others. It seems like everywhere I turn, everyone is SO negative about everything. I feel at times my lifeline which should be God’s Word is only a thread. I’m tired. I know He says I am forgiven, but it seems like every “wrong” decision I’ve ever made is crashing in on me. Regret guilt condemnation etc. I read your articles, Joseph Prince books and yet it “feels” like I’m alone without God. I know there is nothing you can do but I needed to say it. Hey Paul. I have a question. how should a person with Asperger and scrupulosity take in the word of God? I have both and it is very crippling at ties. Aspergers has apprehension, fear something bad will happened.
Ive been struggling for years with my OCD and recently, I started to see a change. my view has change on somethings because some of your post has changed my mind. But for some reason, I always fears that I not received salvation. You said that “Those who say Jesus is Lord will be saved.” what about demons, they called him Lord?
Another thing is power not to sin. what if I don’t use God’s power to not sin, but still believe in his Son? Do my actions reflect what I believe? that if I do bad I am not a believer in Christ?
There’s more information to fully understand the specific questions, but I rather keep it short, I think. Again with Aspergers, being wired a specific way and apprehension its very difficult to grasp the Word of God. seems like being double minded.
One of the amazing things about the gospel of grace that I have seen, is it has helped people be set free from OCD/scrupulosity. It does that by getting our attention off ourselves (what am I doing? have I done enough? how can I be sure?) and onto Jesus, who did everything on our behalf, who even saves us and keeps us firm to the end (1 Cor 1:8).
My answers to your questions will not set you free – they’ll probably just stimulate more questions of the kind “what about this verse?” Our natural understanding pushes us to self-trust and doubt. I encourage you to renew your mind and take those thoughts captive. Make them bow to King Jesus. You are in a mental battle, but it’s a battle you can win! Let the praises of Jesus be often on your lips. When those dark thoughts attack you, praise the One whose Name is above all others. This is called walking by faith and as you do that his grace will flow powerfully in your life and those unhealthy thoughts will wither.
thanks for the reply. it has been very difficult lately. it is hard to understand somethings. I just want to do somethings, like write fantasy stories, play video games, and not fear of not being in faith, if that makes sense. I am so creative in what I want to do, but sometimes my anxiety gets a hold of me. Thoughts of “Well, if rest from your works, as in sinful works like lying, then you rest in God? so the works are stop doing things that are sinful and not just trying to be God?”

I am personally drawn to the Book of Revelation, and your blog posts concerning the seven letters to the seven churches are the absolute best commentary I’ve ever read on that subject. You have no idea how much I appreciated those posts. I was wondering if you might be planning to write about the other 3 letters you have not touched on yet- the letters to the churches in Smyrna, Pergamum, and Philadelphia. I am especially interested in hearing your thoughts on the the letter to the church of Pergamum. I have a difficult time understanding this letter from a “New Covenant” perspective, and I was hoping you might explain what is going on with that one. You provided such clarity on those other four letters. Do you have any plans to write about those? Thanks again for everything!

1: I’ve been running across teachings saying unforgiveness, hate, anger, and resentment can block your healing, true?
2: I noticed in your post “Faith, Unbelief” you mentioned, “A person might have to fast to receive a breakthrough” or to that effect. Yet in a comment on another page (don’t remember where, but will look for it if need be) you replied to someone whom asked if you believed in fasting and tithing, “I only do the New Testament”, in other words, “they are not in the New Testament so I don’t do them”. Again, something to that effect. She, as well as I, really liked that reply. If I understood the comments correctly, can you please explain the contradiction?

1. Substitute the word healing for grace and you will have your answer. Can hatred and resentment stop you from experiencing God’s grace? Definitely. (Heb 12:15 comes to mind.) We need to take hateful and bitter thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. I’m not saying this is easy – sometimes it’s not.
2. Explain the contradiction – um, I was being glib? Seriously, if fasting helps, fast. All things are lawful. I fast on occasion.
Hey, Paul. I was talking to my friend, DIana Christmas night . We met at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Cove in Asheville, NC in 2011. Since then I’ve visited her in Tennessee and she has visited me in Arizona. I was trying to explain to her that the law of the Old Testament does not pertain to us believers–that it is not bad in itself –but that it is there to show the unbeliever his need for Christ as Savior. As we talked more the ” wrath of God remains on the nonbeliever ” came up in my mind and hers. But–then this morning as I was thinking ” who said that and when” I googled and came up with John 3:36. Ahhh.. but that was said by Jesus PRIOR to the cross . So no wrath remains upon the nonbeliever either. I googled that scripture and Escape to Reality and sure enough you mention the same thing ! I just sent Diana an email explaining this and a link to that post by you : ) This is why it’s imperative that we believers need to financially support you, no matter what the amount or in what way. Professing Christians have had nearly 2000 years to cloud, twist, and take out of context scriptures so that we have clouded and misrepresented the real gospel itself. Undertanding the Old Covenant and the New Covenant and when the Old ended and the New began is SO vital. I can’t thank you enough for continuing to show us that and the true, inexplicable freedom we do have in Christ. I spent the night in Kingman, AZ about two hours away from my arrival in Vegas, where ironically I would have been thinking the wrath of God remained on many in that city : )

Wrestling with understanding my Reformed Theology friends. I cannot reconcile Calvinistic view points of elect. What are your basic thoughts on this topic. I cannot reconcile that view with the doctrine of grace.

Paul, thank you for the perspective I understand that was reasonable and points to the nature of God. This was in regards to tithing. Bottom line, love one another and listen and have communication with our Lord. I agree fully, that it is the matter of the heart, rather than trying to please God. Here is my concern.: The church I attend at every service have people passing the plate around. In my opinion this disrupts what could be better use to further minister, pray for those seeking prayer etc. What I would like to see is 1-2 boxes in the back (or wherever, easily accessed for people) to donate what they want or what the Spirit of God prompts them to do. Leaving it upon the individuals to either be moved by their hearts or Spirit to donate. Leaving the ministry then rely on faith, trusting God to help on maintaining the building etc. This being also for occasions where God as a church to give to missions or the needs of those in the building (church) (though I know we are the church not a building) as the spirit moves us. Most of all I believe we should be ready always to be willing to give in time of need and as the Spirit again moves us. I pray my eyes be open and ears to hear him for opportunities to love others. I am not saying this for assurance rather, how can a church get out of the tithe business and into trusting God, as the example above. Thank you, and to God the glory. Emmett

Paul: I believe in Jesus Christ and his love for me. I’m also faced with addiction, depression and a catstrophic life situation that has me contemplating suicide. I’m facing pain, suffering and hardship that I don’t think I can bear even as I try to ask for Gods help. I’m feeling it’s my only option…

Hi Brian, please don’t fall for that lie. There are always other options. I know from personal experience that when we go through extremely hard times, all perspective is lost. There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. Others can see hope, but we can’t. Having gone through the tunnel to the other side, I want to encourage you to hang in there. As someone once said, when you’re going through hell, keep going. Cast your cares and anxieties upon the Lord. Your heavenly Father cares for you, and his word for you today is “I love you and I will never give up on you.”

I hope you are enjoying the grace of our Lord Jesus christ. I have a request from you. I am an international student in Turkey (I come from Rwanda) and I have heard of eternal forgiveness of sins through the grace of God which was made available by the blood of Jesus shed on the cross. (I read those from your posts on escapetoreality.org)
I am still a child in grace and still need to grow. However, one of our tasks or duties if you like that believers have after being saved, is that they have to spread the good news to those who havent heard of it.
Being in the muslim country where less or none has known who Christ really is, I feel the great responsibility to preach them the gospel. The problem is, i dont know how. And sometimes I feel like I dont even know why I should get myself into troubles in the first place.
My request is, being a preacher of the true gospel, what will be your guide to me, where am I supposed to start from, what plan do I have to take.
I know that knowing where I am going, and having a map in my hands will make as well as understanding what I am doing will prevent me from giving up on my way.

Hello Patrick. This is definitely a question for the Holy Spirit to answer. Allow him to lead and guide you. I have friends who are missionaries in Muslim countries and I know they need to be as wise as serpents, and as harmless as doves (Matt 10:16). I would not try to make anything happen, but trust the Holy Spirit to open doors for you as he did for Paul (1 Cor 16:9). Most importantly, do not feel under any pressure to prove yourself to the Lord. You have nothing to prove. Be blessed.

Have you considered making your books available for iBooks? I purchased Hyper Grace Gospel and The Gospel in 20 questions for kindle but I do find iBooks easier to use and purchase from.
I’ve been a struggling Christian for many years and wished I had learned about the true Gospel years ago. It would have prevented a lot of struggles and confusion. Keep up the good work.
Both GITQ and The Hyper-Grace Gospel are available as iBooks. However, we have found for every book sold on iTunes, we sell about 1000 on Kindle. It’s a tiny market.

I recently set down with the Elders of my church to discuss the old/new Covenant mixed Gospel they teach and how it promotes striving, doubt, and ‘I’m not really okay’ among the body. My concern is for the people who are being weighed down every week when they should be celebrating their okayness.
I was met with the accusation that I was light on sin and told that all of the truths about the believers perfection are only positional.
I currently serve as the treasurer of this church and I also play and sing on the praise and worship team. This is becoming increasingly difficult on both fronts. As I lead the stewardship team I am the only one who does not believe that we are under a compulsion to pay a 10% tithe. Also, I am growing weary of the doctrine of distance and longing that dominates the majority of our worship music.
If there were a church near me that taught the gospel of grace I probably would have just left this church methodically and quietly without attempting to enter into a discussion with the leaders. However, there is no such church that I can find here on the west side of Indianapolis. So, since the pastor and elders are all young, I thought there might be a chance that they would entertain this discussion and possibly start realizing their own freedom in Christ.
At this point, that seems highly unlikely. I am not writing to ask you to tell me what to do. I am only asking for your advice in this difficult situation.

I once read that You have a lot of books of Michael Eaton (so do I). Did You heard the sad news he passed away on 9th of June in Johannesburg. He was truley a Grace man! Such a joy to read and hear him preaching.

Dear Paul, I have a pastor friend (he was a pastor) who has read everything you have written. His wife, once devoted to Jesus alone, now embraces everything – from using mediums to contact the dead, to hinduism, buddhism, telling women they need to find their inner goddess, every new age thing she can lay her hands on,etc. She says she does not tell people about Jesus because that is up to God if He wants to. Her husband, is now questioning whether all are saved, everyone goes to heaven to be with God. No need for faith in Jesus for salvation. He was telling my husband how he is thinking along these lines. My husband said he will search scripture and study some more in order to better talk with him and our friend said, don’t bother. It will just take you down rabbit trails. Just read AD70. Wow! I have to thank him. Because of this, I am only reading the Bible. I have realized that I would rather read the Bible and struggle with understanding, than read a book about the subject with someone’s interpretation. Not because I am a “know it all,” but because God is. Divine interpretation and understanding beats mans hands down. I have nothing against you, and like I said, have never read anything by you. I am just sad and confused how a couple could go completely 180. Our friend taught us so much about grace about 8 years ago and we learned so much from him. He was an awesome teacher. And now he says he doesn’t share Jesus or the gospel with anyone. He doesn’t feel he needs to or wants to. Any thoughts on all of this or how I should respond to them? So far, we have just agreed to disagree. Don’t know why I decided to write to you, but thought, why not? Thanks, Lori
Hi Lori. Sadly there are some who’ve wandered from the gospel into error, saying that all are saved or that we don’t need to tell people about Jesus. This has been happening for 2,000 years and will probably continue to happen. Paul, Peter and John devoted whole chapters warning about these sorts of things. My response? Keep preaching the gospel. Keep telling people about Jesus.

Hi Louise, thanks for your encouraging feedback. As you know, I have a big place in my heart for China, having lived in HK for so long. My answer to your question depends on whether the students know Jesus and how well they read English. If they don’t know Jesus and don’t read well, then I recommend Stuff Jesus Never Said. It presents the gospel of grace in a simple, easy-to-grasp format, and it has a lot of pictures. If they do know Jesus and can read at an 8th-grade level or better, I recommend The Gospel in Ten Words.

“See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” (Hebrews 3:12-13).
The author (Paul?) is encouraging his Hebrew brothers to put their faith in Christ. He is not speaking to believers because believers don’t have unbelieving hearts. “See to it today,” means “make up your mind and get off the fence.” He’s writing to Jews who have a share in the heavenly calling (see 3:1) because we all have a share in the heavenly calling and the Jews perhaps more so on account of Abraham.
Repeatedly in the opening chapters of Hebrews, the author exhorts his Jewish readers to believe in Jesus (see 2:1, 3:8, 3:15, 4:2). And again and again he says “do it today.” He is speaking to people who have not opened the door to Jesus. They’ve heard the gospel but not received it. They’ve seen the light but preferred the darkness. They are like the crowds who followed Jesus but turned away when he said “eat and drink me.”

Hi Paul! Someone emailed me asking me about John 14:15 and John 14:23-24. She asked the following questions:
“John 14:15 says “If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) My commands. And John 14:23-24 says “Jesus answered, If a person [really] loves Me, he will keep My word [obey My teaching]; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. Vs. 24…Anyone who does not [really] love Me does not observe and obey My teaching. These verses, specifically vs. 23, almost make it sound as if the Father will love us only if we keep His commands. This makes His love sound unconditional. And that if we really love Him, we will keep His commands. I know I don’t obey His commands all the time. Does this mean I don’t really love Him? This confuses me. Can you help me with this??”
