Why Was the Seventh Day Holy?

When God made the heavens and the earth, everything he did was good. And yet none of the six days of creation was considered holy.

And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy. (Genesis 2:3)

Have you ever wondered about that?

God made the stars and planets and it was good – but not holy.

God made the animals and the trees and it was all good – but not holy.

Not until Day Seven do we find God looking around at creation and saying, “Yes, this is particularly good day, I’m going to make it a holy day.”

What made the seventh day more special than the rest?

I’ll bet you can guess the answer already, but put your hand down for a moment and think about another question first. What does holiness mean? What does it mean to sanctify something?

Think of all the different definitions of holiness you have heard and apply them – if you can – to the creation week. Remember, the first six days were not holy – only the seventh day was sanctified.

– “Holiness means sin avoidance.” If that is true then the first six days of creation must have been disqualified by sin. Yet God said those days were all good. Nope. That’s not what holiness means.

– “Holiness means moral perfection.” Ditto. There was no imperfection in the creation week; God only does good work. So that can’t be what holiness means either.

– “Holiness means law-keeping.” What law? We are talking about the beginning of the world here. There was no law and no one to keep it.

– “Holiness means set apart to God.” Really? So you’re saying the whole earth is not the Lord’s, that he made little bits of it and said “this part is not mine – this unholy bit is set apart to someone I haven’t made yet”? That’s a bit of a stretch. I don’t think that is what real holiness is.

– “Holiness is godliness.” Quite aside from the redundancy of this definition, my question stills stands. Why was only the seventh day considered holy? If it was a “godly” day, what made the first six less godly?

My point is this: We have been sold a bunch of useless definitions of holiness. They don’t actually tell us what holiness is. This is because they come at holiness from the wrong angle – the human angle – and as such they are flawed and incomplete.

Holiness is a God thing. He is holy and he makes things, like people and creation days, holy.

What is holiness?

Holiness means wholeness. To be holy is to be wholly whole, completely complete, and perfectly perfect.

Why was the seventh day holy when the other six days were not? Because the seventh day was the day of completion. Aha! Just look at how the seventh day is described in Genesis 2:

v1. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
v2.  By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
v3.  And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

The Law of First Mention taught to Bible School students says you need to pay particular attention the first time anything is mentioned in the Bible. In Genesis 2:3 we find the first mention of the word qadash which means “sanctify” or “made holy.” As you can see, sanctification has little to do with rule-keeping or sin avoidance and everything to do with being complete.

It’s almost as if God could envisage how we would get confused in our pursuit of holiness and so decided to send us a message by connecting holiness with holidays.

The seventh day of creation was a holy day or a holiday. That is a divinely-engineered coincidence. If you want an insight into the meaning of true holiness, you only need to think of what makes for a good holiday.

And then God created holidays

A holiday is not a holiday when the job is half-done or there is work left unfinished. How can you enjoy a day off when the lawn is half-mowed, the cake is half-baked, or the bills half-paid?

But once the work is done – then it’s a holiday! The pressure’s off.

Now you can relax.

Adam and Eve began their new lives on a holiday.

Sure there was much to do and learn and discover, but they were made fully formed and lacking nothing. They weren’t works-in-progress. They were God-made masterpieces, flawless works of art, perfectly capable of communing with the Creator.

Sadly, they never got to experience the life that God had for them but that was not because of some manufacturing defect. Adam and Eve made a bad and fleshly choice.

But put aside the Fall for the moment and try to envision how things might have been if all had gone according to the original plan.

The holy life that God intended for Adam and Eve was meant to be one of joyful discovery and learning to live loved. Their occupation was meant to be co-laboring with the Lord of life. Living in fellowship with the Lord they were capable of unimaginable greatness.

This is exactly how it is with you.

The day you began your new life in Christ you were made wholly new and fully formed. The new you is holy and whole; you are literally complete in him (Col 2:10).

You are a God-made masterpiece, a flawless work of art, perfectly capable of communing with the One who made you and gave you his life. You are not a work in progress for you have been made perfect forever.

By one offering he has perfected forever, them that are sanctified. (Hebrews 10:14)

When you have had a revelation of his sanctifying work, all the pressure to perform and improve evaporates. There’s no need for D.I.Y. Christianity because everything that needed to be done to make you a new creation has been done. The pressure’s off because it is finished.

So what happens now?

The life God intends for you is one of joyful discovery. It is learning to live loved (because you are loved) and being holy (because you are holy). It is growing into who you already are in Christ.

This is what it means to live the Christian life.

It is not striving to perfect what he started; it is resting in his finished work and holidaying in his holiness.

  1. “learning to live loved… because you ARE loved” 🙂
if there is a “first step” of entering into the understanding and experiencing of grace, this would be it!
until we have a revelation of how completely and perfectly we are loved by God (even if we have trouble comprehending just how complete and perfect it is) we have a hard time accepting why God would want to bless us the way that He does… or Who He really IS.

    • ps. it was probably a couple of months, after becoming a believer, before i really even started to understand God’s love. revelation came one day studying 1 cor 13: “love is…love is not…” wasn’t a “to-do list” of how I am “supposed to” love others (or expect others to love me)… it was an outright description of how GOD loves me! God IS love -it is a picture of His very “I AM-ness!”

      • WOW Jennie this sound like what I said just a month ago. What a revelation. God is so awesome and what Love the Father has for us!!!

  2. is it valid to say ‘be perfect because God is perfect’? is ‘complete’ and ‘perfect’ the same?
what does 1 Peter 1:15-16 means? ‘be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”’ ?

  3. Thanks Paul, I will never again confuse the meaning of holiness. What a clear and simply teaching backed up by scripture. No one, even the most logical person can keep this one straight.

    • Opps sorry, early morning eyes…I meant that no one should be able to confuse or mess this one up. But then religion has, has it.

  4. Paul can you think of any reason that What you call the six days of creation the scriptures does not say that the second day was good as it does all the others and if this is the creation story why is the word created not seen untill the fifth day

    • Hi Rick,
What translation are you using that does not use the word created until the fifth day?

      • KJV does not say created until the 5th day On the 5 Th day he created great whales & every LIVING creature that moves God in the beginning had already CREATED heaven and earth so each of the days up to day 5 he brought forth by speaking it

Great liberating stuff. Thank you so much! “Growing into who we already are in Christ” – love it. I’m involved with a healing and deliverance ministry, and I really see God “healing and delivering” us into who we already are in Christ. And a foundational part of this loving process is pulling us out of religion. Bless you brother from down under! (From Cape Town)

  6. Amen Paul! Love it.

Fantastic Paul. I loved it so much. I sent it on to my son and grandson who recently experienced one of thos “divinely engineered coincidences” that the Lord gives us. Praise the Lord. Keep up the good work. I always look forward to your emails.

Thanks, Paul. You really have a gift for explaining and teaching things in a way that totally makes sense! This understanding of holiness flows with my experience of being born again. I finally felt settled, wholly whole, completely complete, and perfectly perfect even though I had some major issues going on in my heart. Jesus showed me my previous view of “perfect” was flawed, as I thought it meant living morally pure and having spotless behavior as judged by the religious leaders around me.

Thank you Jesus for setting me free!!!!!!!

“When you have had a revelation of His sanctifying work, all the pressure to perform and improve evaporates. There’s no need for D.I.Y. Christianity because everything that needed to be done to make you a new creation has been done. The pressure’s off because it is finished.

  9. What a wonderful post, Paul. Thank you.

I so agree. The 7th day is a most wonderful holiday for me. Is is for you too? Or do you consider it acceptable to regard Sunday, the day of pagan sun worship as a substitute? Have been reading your website for a while now, and mostly enjoy your thoughts.

    • Joyce, every day is a holiday since I learned to rest in His finished work. There are no pagan days; God made them all. Pagan deities made zero.

      • Thank you for that insight!! I was so debating on whether Sunday or Saturday should be worshiped
& besides your right he made them all & said they were good, but the 7th say is made holy so which day should i keep holy??? Or does it say later in the bible that is doesn’t matter I am very confused. I’m sorry I probably confused you, but if you can try your best and answer me. I’m really thinking that calenders were never how they are now and no one really knows which one is holy, but the only clue is the seventh so for all we know Sunday could be the one. Not really sure, I’d appreciate your help. Also, by the way, I worship every day with music, what I do and what I say so why should church be any different than the fact the your uniting with your fellow believers? Everyone should be worshiping God everyday. For all I know I could keeping everyday holy lol. God bless! -Amanda

      • Amanda, Jesus is our sabbath-rest. Worship Him.

  11. Guys, thank you for the encouraging feedback on this and the other two posts in the holiness series. This morning there were a record number of comments waiting to be approved (20+). I am delighted that this subject is resonating with you and my apologies that I don’t have time to reply to each of you individually. I am presently head down, tail up working on a book that I hope to have mostly finished before the school holidays. Please keep the comments coming. Not only do they motivate me to keep writing but I find them very helpful in sharpening my ideas. Blessings on your heads!

  12. Wow, Paul. That’s some good writing. Enjoyed it all, but was particularly doing some house-cleaning of the mind in your section on holidays! This thinking makes life so much more exciting to live, really live and want others to ‘live’ as well! ~ Tammy

Which day do you consider as “the zeventh day?”
When God rested on the seventh day, and maked it holy.
    Which day should that be???

  14. I JUST LOVE THIS SITE ❤ ! Thank yyou Paul! ha! I am encouraged all everytime I'm on here. You are a blessing!!!

  15. Great post Paul…may God keep giving you burden lifting revelations…

  16. Thank you Paul, am really trying to get my head around this gem…I still haven’t done so, can’t quite figure out that I have completely arrived in my Christian life as you are suggesting..I checked your verse for Colossians 2:10, the message version seems to help,( I like to do so after reading the King James:-), when in context of the surrounding verses.
    Colossians 2:8-12
    The Message (MSG)
8-10Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything.
11-15Entering into this fullness is not something you figure out or achieve. It’s not a matter of being circumcised or keeping a long list of laws. No, you’re already in—insiders—not through some secretive initiation rite but rather through what Christ has already gone through for you, destroying the power of sin. If it’s an initiation ritual you’re after, you’ve already been through it by submitting to baptism. Going under the water was a burial of your old life; coming up out of it was a resurrection, God raising you from the dead as he did Christ. When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive—right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross. He stripped all the spiritual tyrants in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked through the streets.
All the very best with your upcoming book..

    • Your last sentence Paul needs lots, and lots more reflection on my behalf…

….It is growing into who you already are in Christ. This is what it means to live the Christian life. It is not striving to perfect what He started; it is resting in His finished work and holidaying in His holiness.

      • maybe this analogy will help? grace is like a river. when you believed in Christ you either jumped in or waded in (the point is, you got in.)
after that you have 2 choices:
you can fight (strive) where the river wants to take you, swim back to the shore, where you can “safely” walk along the river bank…
or you can choose to stay in/get back in and float along (rest), come what may, because the map (bible) bears witness that THIS river is going to safely get you to the “end” (which is Christ Himself.)
the point is, all believers have been promised to make it to the finish line. we are all traveling along the river one way or the other – either walking along the shoreline, occasionally getting our feet wet – or floating in the river itself, holidaying and resting and enjoying shalom-peace.
Jesus made the voyage a lot easier than some of us would dare to believe! but believing Jesus is what its all about, isn’t it? 🙂

      • Yes Jenni, thankyou for this analogy, I waded in to some extent, but am learning to swim. As you say ‘unbelief,’ is the problem and the natural response is to head straight to the safety of the bank, ( the bottom line is our faith, belief followed by action, it is fundamental.. stay in the river 🙂 the soul(our emotions, will and volition) is a powerful rational instrument, it can also work against us. One also has to contend with the battle of unseen lurking forces, so how can you just lie comfortably on your back and float down the river! So as you can see, the reality it is not as easy as it seems. However, as you say, we have a lifeline so there is never an excuse to give up.

      • yes, the mind is the battlefield between our born again spirit and our flesh (senses). we were all given the same measure of faith to believe in Christ (given to us to by the Holy Spirit) – we had to have it before we could even get into the river. it is our privilege to invest/use what has been given us to prosper/multiply (see the parable of the 10 minas in Luke.) we invest this faith every day we wake up and make the choice to believe Jesus did what He said he did and that we are who Jesus says we are. do you believe that Jesus has perfect faith? b/c even His perfect faith has been accounted to us! “as He is, so are we in this world!” (1 john 4:17)
as far as unseen forces go, know that you are safely tucked away into the secret place (psalm 91). we can’t be ignorant that these things exist and trials will come, but we are to look at them from the perspective of already being victorious over them. we’ve already won the race, we just don’t know what we’ve gone thru to get there! 😉

  17. I’m still grappling with this issue Jenni, thank you for your patience:-) I say a BIG “amen” to the fact that God is love, He lives in us and somehow within this mystery, we live in Him! And by faith we wake up each day and have a choice to seek God.
Holiness to me still seems an inheritance in the future, and we need to go through trials, suffering before we receive it. I feel that you are implying that somehow we are like God.. now; in His fullness and holiness. This I don’t understand. For example, God’s love contains no fear right, yet I am fearful. It is only fully developed love that drives out fear. I don’t have this now. Do you not experience fear? The idea that we have already won the race as you suggest, or somehow have received our inheritance,we are victorious over fear or have perfect faith doesn’t still make sense to me. On paper yes, in reality, no, it seems that maybe it is a safe and comfortable road to take? 1John 4:17 says our love is made perfect, not that is already perfected. Are we holy simply because God is holy? Doesn’t holiness or wholeness have to be worked out and perfected in our lives? Yes, you are right in saying His perfect faith is accounted to us. But it is not a gift that has to be opened, shared and then put into use before the benefits are manifested? I’m not sure about your statement we have already won the race, we just don’t know what we have to go through to get there? The implication is that we are already in this perfect holy place.. sorry, I am slow and still don’t get it. Jesus talked about rewards, some people receive them, I say fair enough to that! To receive them (Psalm 91) we have a choice to…Go the Lord..live under His protection…Then you will be safe…If you love me..call out to me…run to Him..If you hold onto me…I will get you out of trouble. This Psalm isn’t passive..it is active? to me it implies we have to do something, it doesn’t suggest we just rest in God’s holiness or we have already won the race??

    • hmmm. maybe let me share a personal experience w/ you that helped me w/ my mental imagery (and i hope it will help you too)? one time while i was praying, i felt that i was literally being hugged by Jesus. trying to put into words what had happened (b/c i journal), my thought process went something like this: i was here in my backyard. He was here in my backyard w/ me?… the bible says He is seated at the Father’s right hand… so does that mean i was there w/ Him too? my conclusion was, that a part of me (i now know my spirit) is already there w/ Him, but at the same moment, it is also here w/ me in my body (b/c I’m still here in it!) ephesians 2:6 says God raised(past tense) us up along w/ Christ and SEATED(past tense) us w/ Him in the heavenly places. it doesn’t say God “will raise” us up or “will seat” us…its already in the past! a done deal! and yet here we are, still in our bodies. God is outside of time. and b/c we are in Christ, then there is also a “part” of us that is outside of time. (b/c the real you IS actually your spirit) yes, right this very second you are a completed, perfected, righteous, made whole james – sitting at your computer reading this AND sitting w/ Jesus at the Fathers right hand! 🙂

i don’t experience fear the way that i used to. actually, i used to take medication for anxiety and panic attacks. God’s perfect love casts out fear. i used to worry about my kids all the time. when i began to know and experience how much God loved me, i realized He loved my kids the same way. i knew i was in good hands, so i knew they were too. i actually use psalm 91 (NLT) as a promise from God to me and my family when i get worried about something (since the Hebrew language actually has no future tense, i changed the verbs to present tense, and i changed all the “you”s to “i”s, so i could read it out loud and confess it)

questions are good! i am always asking God about everything – the things i don’t understand – and even for more about the things i think that i do! lol
ask and it will be given. seek and you will find. knock and the door will be opened… and thats a promise! 🙂

  18. Thanks Jenni, you have written from your heart and personal experience. I agree, very often our fear is unwarranted, disproportional, mine can be. Your response is an encouragement for me to do likewise as I read scripture, to bask in the promises of God and to take them on board. I agree too that it must be our spirit that is with God, for what else can be? Therefore our spirit is our holiness and wholeness, this is where it is found. My understanding is once being ‘born again’ this happens between us and God..our spirit being pure( but somehow bound up in some way because of the fall) is then released into that place, as you said “seated with Christ”…this must be so cause God cannot mix/blend/unite with anything of us that is corrupted by sin( it seems then our mind/soul/body is the problem for us). That is why we need the renewing of the mind is essential, because how could our spirit, shouldn’t I say (who/ which- after all the Holy Spirit is referred to as a person) is pure, relate to a mind that is corrupted by sin and this world? To live in the spirit, as is often quoted, means our spirit must be the dominant agent operating within us. My fear comes about I think because I am living by my mind, emotions and my own will. I am not a bible scholar, but my mind:-) poses another question here, if it is our spirit that lives on after we die, what happens to our mind, emotions and our will??… Can’t help asking this…I am thankful that you are helping me unravel the issue of holiness…(I see it now in the sense that it is very much tied to our spirit)… who is the real me anyway…and as you said we need to hold onto Gods promises and say Amen to receive them!(2Cor.1:20) I will reread Psalm 91 and say amen to that!

    • James, there is a danger of over-thinking this, particularly if you listen to those who say we are only saved in part (eg: holy spirit, dirty soul). Some preachers like to make bold declarations about the differences between the spirit and the soul but these distinctions are not supported by scripture. The Bible defines neither and blurs the lines between the two. We can’t even say for certain whether the spirit and soul are separate as many attributes of one are shared by the other. Will you have a mind, emotions, and will in eternity? Of course! You will even have a body (see 1 Cor 15:44ff). Your mind is not the enemy – you have the mind of Christ. To walk in the spirit is to trust in the Lord. But for now I want to confidently declare to you, that if you are in Christ, you are 100% saved. The old has gone, the new has come. As He is, so are you in this world. Rest in that.

    • yep, pastor paul is right james…too much trying to understand can make you confused… and God is not the author of chaos nor confusion.
take a deep breath and exhale. thank Jesus for what He’s done in your life and wake up tomorrow expecting Him to reveal Himself to you in some way that will be clear to you. He made you- he knows how you learn things. The Holy Spirit will guide you into all understanding. 😉

      Hi James.
You have made one statement that I believe leads people into the incorrect mindset and may be at the root of your predicament. You say that you will die,I believe that you will never die. I believe that before you accepted Christ you were dead but now you are alive just unable to live in the fullness of life because of your location.
Reading the story of Lazarus’s “Resurrection” Jesus says to the Disciples he is sleeping only later after their insistence he allows them to correct him, I would ask you to read his responses to Martha and Mary. I do not believe Lazarus’s was Resurrected only woken up, the real miracle in Lazarus,s life happened long before this event.
You may already believe the above, but if you continue stating the opposite you drive your mind into confusion and doubt.

  19. Paul and Jenni, will rest in this and a quick glance at your link above looks very helpful…look forward to reading your new post.

  20. Its wonderful makes so much sense love it.

  21. This comment is written from Indonesia. I just recently stumbled into your blog. Your writings are clear and easy to grasp. In my early years walking with the Lord, I fed on wholesome radical grace writings like yours, but along the years, I foraged on many fast food junk teachings of grace / work mixture. I am thankful to the Lord that He is using your blog to remind me once again to go back to the very basic of the true good news which I once held so dearly.

I go all over and up and down the internet to see what believers and teachers are saying about the Truth of the Gospel, and get some good stuff to find out that it is only half truths that take my eyes and mind off of what our God has done in Christ, and on to what I must do, and see nothing but incompleteness. But when I come here to this site, I get the real Truth of Gods finished work in Christ which puts peace and joy in my heart to really enjoy fellowship with our Savior! Thank you Heavenly Father! 🙂

  23. Matthew 12:8 clearly states, “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” NOT ‘The SON of MAN is the SABBATH’ well, I just quoted this because you’re the one who gave the Bible verse. Do not confuse the people that God rested on the Seventh-day and made it HOLY. The Bible is very clear. Do not confuse the people.

    • Some corrections: God rested on the Seventh-day and MADE IT HOLY. (please read for yourselves, Exodus 20:8-11) I don’t think there’s a need for further elaboration and clarification for us to understand this. Sometimes, people can be too genius to further elaborate and make their own explanation for things. Why among the ten commandments, the fourth (which is keeping the Sabbath holy) is the only one humans try to avoid and try their best to distort? It’s very simple: Keep the seventh-day holy.

      • Brenchong, if you are going to live by this law, you must live by all of them (Jas 2:10, Gal 5:3). You can’t pick and choose your laws.

  24. Brenchong is right.
Paul, are you saying that the 10 commandments have been abolished, or just the fourth?

    • I don’t believe I was saying anything about the commandments being abolished. (Nice attempt at setting up a straw man though!)

I am saying that if you choose to live under law, you are obligated to keep the whole law – you can’t just choose your favorite laws. So no shellfish, diary, denim – that sort of thing. If you’ve even a cheeseburger, you’re a law-breaker and a sinner. For me, however, I choose to live by faith in Jesus who is the end of the law for all who believe (Rom 10:4). You can keep your special days but Jesus is my Sabbath rest.

      • Sin is the transgression of the law, or the “instructions”. It doesn’t go away, because we are in Christ. The law does not make anyone righteous, but transgressing it is still sin. With the Spirit, we now have the dynamics to walk according to God’s standard, because we are no longer a slave to sin.
Paul exhorted (and rebuked) believers many times in his letters, quoting the 10 commandments. These 10 commandments are eternal….they were written with God’s own finger. These are not Jewish, the Sabbath is mentioned in Gen. 2.3. In Revelation 22.14-15, it speaks of those who still transgress these commandments.
The first 4 are connected directly to God, the next 6, for your neighbor.
You are using a very broad brush when you use the word law.
God is the one who established the Sabbath, Hebrews 4.9 says that it still remains for the people of God.
The Sabbath is about obedience, & love, & reverence, not establishing righteousness.
If you choose to profane the Sabbath, that is your choice….but it is very dangerous to lead others astray.

      • Paradoxically, by elevating the shadow (the law) ahead of the reality (Jesus), you are the one profaning both AND setting aside grace. Hebrews 4:9 is not about keeping the law, but entering the Sabbath-rest (Jesus) – something the law-observant Israelites never did. Paul never used the law to make veiled threats to those under grace, as you have done. Or perhaps you would like to clarify what danger I am supposedly in?

  25. Pastor Paul, you are very accurate and theologically sound. You should excuse people like mvs 123 for their ignorance of the difference between the NT and the OLD. With time, the Lord will reveal the truth to them. One thing is clear though, if they refuse to roll away the stone of the Law, Resurrection power may not reach within to deliver them even if they are called Lazarus (The one helped by God). The New Testament is a Revelation that is not merely “taught” but “caught”. I am so blessed to stumble (directed by the Lord to?) on your website. God bless you for the good work. It’s really good and refreshing to know that there are others out there preaching Grace to a sick and dying world. I salute you sir!

  26. No threats, sir. There are 2 commandments for us today, that must be kept.
If we love God with everything we have, & our neighbor/brother as ourselves, we have fulfilled the law. Rom. 13.10, Gal.5.14, James 2.8, 1 John 3.23-24.
However, if we, as believers, are not keeping these 2 commandments, will we not be transgressing the law? 1 John 3.4….for sin is the transgression of the law.
I am not trying to be contrary to what you have said; we are under grace, you are most correct!
All I am saying, is that the law does not “disappear” for a believer…. by loving our neighbor, we establish it.
But if we do not fulfill the “royal law”, then we are transgressors of it….that is why we need the work of our High Priest, Christ.
    PEACE & BLESSINGS!

    • And peace to you too. My apologies if I over-reacted. I am a bit sensitive to people warning me off grace. The last thing I was will say here is that those are under grace are not under law – not even those two commandments. When Jesus was asked “which is the greatest commandment in the law” (Mt 22:36), he gave those two commandments saying they summed up “the Law and the prophets” (Mt 22:40). On this occasion, Jesus was preaching law to someone born under the law. We are not under the law.

Am I saying we shouldn’t love others? Of course not. I am saying that being law-conscious is being unfaithful to Jesus (Romans 7). It’s spiritual adultery. Either you believe Christ is the end of the law – the limit, the fulfillment – or you don’t (Rom 10:4). To the degree that you are conscious of trying to keep these laws – for whatever noble reason – to that degree you are walking in the flesh and insulting the spirit of grace. I say we are to live for Jesus and walk in step with the spirit. Walk by faith in him and not faith in our law-keeping and you will find yourself loving your neighbors (and doing much, much more) effortlessly. It’s a superior way to live.

      • Well stated, no arguments here. Help me out, though. If there are no commandments to adhere to, please explain, for example, 1 John 5.2-3. Then, Revelation 22.14. These are not choice sound bites, there are many more just like these verses.

      • 1 John 5:2-3 follows 1 John 1 – that is the order to read it. Believing comes first; obedience follows. It’s a by-product of trusting God, as I explain in this post. Not everyone who obeys, trusts. Some obey out of fear and terror. In other words, they obey despite their unbelief. But everyone who trusts obeys effortlessly. I have just today published a post on the commands of John.

    • mvs123 I am curious here. In the post I am responding to you seem to indicate there are 2 commandments for us today. Yet in the previous post you said “the 10 commandments are eternal” and further eluded to the importance to keeping the Sabbath. So which is it? 10, 3(including Sabbath), 2 or 613? How many of the Laws of Moses are today’s Believer’s supposed to keep? There were many more than the 10 Commandments. Do you follow all of them as a Believer?

      • God word’s are pure, & eternal. Psalm12.6-7. Jesus summed up the entire Torah, & prophets, in one thought; love. The decalogue can be divided into 2 areas; the first four commands regard loving God, the next six, loving your neighbor. Pretty simple.
We know that the law does not bring about righteousness; this comes only by faith in Christ. But it seems that some today are confused, as to what the new/old covenants are. They are not a division in the bible, after Malachi. The new is the promise of righteousness through faith, given to Abraham. The old is that of the letter, given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, and ministered to Israel.
Which commandments do we keep? If we are walking in the spirit, all of them! Why? Because through the Spirit, they are written on your heart. But if you, being a new creature in Christ, steal something, what mark have you missed? You have sinned, & sin is the transgression of the law. The law cannot bring righteousness, it is the schoolmaster, but it is still the standard by which sin is judged. God’s word is eternal; it is not a shadow that is no longer in effect. What has changed is the COVENANT, not the words in the bible. The ministy is now through the spirit. Read 2 Tim 3.16, the scriture Paul is referring to here are not Apostolic letters. But even spirit-filled believers can fall short, as you will read in Paul’s letters. When he rebukes them, or admonishes, where does he draw the standard from? The torah & the prophets. What were the Bereans reading from? Acts 17.11.
My whole point is God’s words & standard never changes, or go away. They will be there on judgement day. The ministries have changed, from letter, to spirit.
        PEACE.

Hi mvs 123 It seems you do not have Faith to live out what you believe, you say correctly the commandments are written on your heart Corinth 3;3 confirms this. Why are you still following the law and not your heart . It says that if you have been following the correct ministry you can trust your new heart.
So my advise to you follow your new heart not the written law.If you don,t believe you have a new heart, be like David and ask God for one, or follow the correct ministry.

You say that law is the standard by witch sin is judged (present tense). I thought sin was judged on the cross Isaiah 53 . I can assure you of this there is no more judgement for those in Yeshua. He really did receive all the judgement. There is judgement for rewards yes .

I would advise you to do a study of how man was judged before the law. Adam and Eve were judged for wanting to have the law.

    • This reply is to mvs123 and not you chrisvanrooyen. The site limits the reply to’s.

@mvs123 since as you suggested “Which commandments do we keep? If we are walking in the spirit, all of them!” and “My whole point is God’s words & standard never changes, or go away” If that is the case and we are supposed to follow “All of them” then when was the last time you made a trip to the Temple in Jerusalem for your annual sacrifice? What day do you recognize as your Sabbath? Do you follow the law in Levitcus 15 as it pertains to a women who is unclean during “her time of the month?” Do you mean to suggest that someone filled with the Holy Spirit will consider a women unclean during this time since the law IS written on our hearts? The Law as it is written is written as a whole. All 613 Mitzvot commands.

As far as the Torah and Prophets go I suggest you read and understand the lesson from Matthew 17 when Jesus was transfigured on the mount. Even Peter, James and John were confused by this event and wanted to continue serving Moses and Elijah. God was quite clear who they and us were to follow…..His Son, Jesus.

And Righteousness does NOT come by Faith but by Grace THROUGH Faith. It is that GRACE that our Faith is based on. There is a difference. There is also a clear and distinct division between the old and new covenants and it is the CROSS. Even Abraham did not have that event available to him. Yes Abram was called righteous by God simply because he believed however eternal salvation was not available to him nor none of the Old Covenant saints.

I suggest you also reread the book of Galatians and try to understand just what Paul was trying to get across to the Galatians. It is quite evident these writings are of Law vs Grace. The Judaizers who came to Galatia and tried to get the believers to also now keep the Law were said to Gal 1: “6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.” Perverting the Gospel of Christ! Really? You want to suggest we are to follow the Law of Moses?

      • You missed my point entirely.
Gal.5.18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

    • I am not even going to comment, on your comment about Adam/Eve, in chapter 2-3 of Genesis. Not trying to be rude, but it does not make sense.

Let’s hear what the Apostle has to say, regarding your “no more judgement”.
2 Cor. 5.9-11 Wherefore we labor, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ: that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
1 John 1.8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

By the way, why is there so much hostility on this website?
      Blessings, Bro

        HI mvs123.
What would you say Adam and Eve believed the knowledge of good and evil was.

I am not going to go down the route of quoting scripture that contradicts what you say.

I will say this we will all before the judgement seat and if you have work it will be judged, I have no work for salvation all I have is my faith in Christ do you believe I will be judged for this. Christ in me and me hidden in him.will the Father crucify his Son again. If Jesus is the only way to salvation and I am judged for my faith in him NO PROBLEM.

Let me know what you think I will be judged for .

I do not believe I do not have sin but believe it has lost its ability to judge me.

        No hostility just challanges.

        Love u Bro

      • Colleen G // April 6, 2013 at 2:55 am //

Because if we are to be judged for our sins after becoming Christian then a large portion of scripture is lying because many passages say that Jesus blood erased, washed and basically deleted all of our sins.
We are hearing you say that that there will be sins after salvation that we are/will be guilty of.
There are only 2 options. Either Jesus erased every single sin we did in our past, in our present and our future OR He only erased our past(which makes what He did no different than the animal sacrifices (Hebrews 9 & 10) and it is up to us to be good little children in hopes that we can do more good than bad so that God will let us into heaven someday, maybe. That is why the hostility. Option 2 says that Jesus was not enough. I am hearing option 2 from you.
We sin we know it. But we know that each and every sin was dealt with at the cross.

  28. We both agree 100% that salvation is a free gift, no strings attached, not performance based. We can be settled on that.
Many only view this life, not realizing that what happens in eternity is NOT equal for all the saved. Contrary to what many churches teach, about eternal life, chapter 22.3 says what we will be doing eternally; SERVING the Lamb.
At the judgement seat of Christ, according to the scriptures, salvation is not in question here…that is a done deal. We will be judged on how we invested our life for Christ, in other words, what our real motives were, etc. Everything will be made manifest. Read carefully. 1 Cor. 3.12-15. Our position, in the kingdom of God, will be based on how we invested our time on earth. All through Paul’s letters, he exhorts believers about running the race, he mentions rewards many times. He uses allegories of a farmer, a soldier, & an athlete, to show that we will reap what we sow. Please take the time to carefully study, & pray about the words of Jesus, to the churches, in Rev. chapters 2, & chapters 3. Find out what it means to be an overcomer.
Brother, don’t discard these words, just because they are contrary to some TBN celebrity. If you went to an art gallery to view a painting, would you view it through a straw?
    Much love in Christ

    • Hey you hit one of the best studies I have ever done. “What is an overcomer?”
The answer rocked my world, shut down a lot of fear and gave me a great tool for weeding out incorrect teachings. 1 John 5:4-5 says in a nutshell what it takes to be an overcomer.
As to the rewards, positions etc. I will be happy to scrub God floors with a toothbrush just to be near Him. I spent enough of my life in misery away from Him. Why should I live in worry/stress that I might not get the plush cushy job/position in heaven? I feel like the Proverbs 31 woman when she laughs at the future because her family is clothed in scarlet and prepared for whatever may come. I’m clothed in scarlet and have moved out of the house of fear! I honestly don’t care what happens in heaven I’m just that thankful to be allowed in.

    • well, i have a question… do you think abraham and all the other old testament saints will be rewarded for how they purposely invested their time and their lives for a Christ that they didn’t have full revelation of? even the disciples didnt understand what Jesus was doing when He went to the cross!
its not about investing our lives or our time for Christ… its about investing the like precious faith we have all been given! (luke 19:11-27). its about the words of faith that we speak! (matt 12:36) its about letting God do His works in and through us by simply believing in Jesus (john 6:28-29) faith is what pleases God! everything that is not of faith is sin… and every penalty for those faithless sins was burned up in Christ’s body on the cross by God’s wrath… (and since He is Just, God doesn’t punish the same sin twice!) nothing else will be made manifest except our faith investments! 🙂

      Hi msv 123

You may have missed that in my fist reply to you I acknowledged the judgement for rewards.
Glad that we agree on salvation,

      Cheers Bro

  29. I am still waiting to see if anyone (in this circle) will acknowledge that the bible teaches that there will be a judgement seat of Christ, for believers. I hear a lot of thoughts, & opinions, but no one seems to confront the actual scriptures that have been presented.

    • Mitch, please limit comments to the post under discussion. No one here is going to discuss judgment because the post above has nothing to do with judgment. See E2R’s comment policy for more.

      • Understood.
My apologies. After I finished the comment, I had realized how it had taken a different course, from where we started.

      • Not a problem. As it happens, I have a big series on judgment and wrath coming out soon. It’s all written and ready to go – just waiting for a slot in the pipeline.

  30. Great. Looking forward to it.

  31. So is the 7th day Saturday or Sunday? Which is the correct day of worship and why?

  32. the other way to look at it is that He made the day holy because He rested. that would mean that God’ rest makes things holy. holiness means God’s restfulness.

presumably, God rests when things are whole. but i am not sure it is not a human think to think that wholeness means holiness. it is not the wholeness or incompleteness of a thing that makes it holy; it is God’s restfulness concerning that thing that makes it holy. it is related, but one focuses on wholeness and the other focuses on God.

  33. The Word Holy in Hebrew means set apart to God when referring to things because of course God can’t be set apart unto himself (well I guess he could but that would be pretty lonely 🙂 ) so I don’t know why you would describe it as a useless definition when that is the definition.

In the Jewish culture they say things are Holy(qadash) all the time but it means for e.g that this piece of furniture is set apart unto me for a special purpose. It doesn’t mean that the other furniture isn’t his or it;s owned by somebody else Do you see what I am saying?
It was Holy because he rested.
Genesis 2:2 By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
If you notice here it says the work is complete but it doesn’t say it’s Holy until rest is emphasized
Genesis 2:3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, BECAUSE IN IT HE RESTED from all His work which God had created and made.
In the context it was Sanctified because he rested from his works it didn’t just say it was Holy because it was complete although that is apart of it. He Sanctified it BECAUSE HE RESTED. He didn’t make it holy because the work was finished but because he RESTED from the work that was finished.

    • It’s a poor definition because it doesn’t capture the full meaning of the word. It’s like defining light as the absence of darkness or blue as not-red. Those are certainly true definitions but they are not very good ones. (I discuss the literal meaning of qadash in this post.) Thankfully the Bible itself provides a better definition of holy, as we have seen above. I like your idea of resting being a fruit of holiness. Because God is holy and his work is holy and because he gives us his holiness we can rest from our labors.

      • Oh I see what you are saying and thanks for the link. Your posts have been a real blessing to me and I am glad I wasn’t viewed as aggressive because of the CAPS I just wanted to distinguish them from the regular font so my message could be clearer but I know this might not be the right post but I see some scriptures in Eternal Security that aren’t finished. Can I ask when you are going to finish them or are they Finished and the problem is on my End?

  34. Saturday or Sunday… which is the Lord’s Day.
I realize All days are His; but which for observance as in Isaiah 58?

    • Under the old covenant only Saturday. Under the new covenant any day because the focus has shifted from the outwards form to the internal heart.

  35. Bad—A—Bing! 😊

Are we living in sins by working on Saturday?

      • BRIAN MULENGA // March 11, 2018 at 6:47 am //

Thank you Paul, but kindly elaborate further. I’m currently engaged in a discussion with a friend from SDA. Who apparently insists it is a sin. And maybe my second question would be, is Sabbath Saturday or is Saturday Sabbath? Which calendar do our friends from SDA use to arrive at Sabbath being Saturday? Is it the Jewish or Gregorian calendar? Thanks Paul

      • The SDA live under law, but we are called to live under grace. This is why your friend is sin-conscious. I have written dozens of articles on the difference between law and grace. I encourage you to check out the archives. But to give you a direct answer to your question: Jesus is your sabbath rest.

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. (Col 2:16-17)

  37. There is no scripture that says “Jesus is the sabbath rest”. However, there is a Commandment that says “Remember the sabbath DAY, to keep it holy”. We can follow the Word of God, or simply listen to false teachings. Read Hebrews 4. Transgressing God’s Commandments is a sin against Him, and the Holy Bible confirms it. 1 John 3:4. Stay in the Word, and the truth will set you free!

    • momzilla76 // July 18, 2018 at 12:40 am // Reply

Yes please stay in the word and be set free. While there is no one verse that exactly says that Jesus is our Sabbath rest(many allude to it) there are plenty that speak of the complete fulfillment of the first covenant. The first covenant is defined per Deuteronomy 4:13 & 9:9 as the covenant on stone in other words the 10 commandments. Hebrews 8:8-13 tells us that Jesus brought us a better covenant built on better promises. Do not seek rightness with God through following the Law for that is self righteousness.(Philippians 3:9) Seek the only righteousness that counts the imputed righteousness of Christ which only comes through faith.(Romans 4) Learn what all of scripture says about ALL of the Law which includes the10 commandments. Let go of Hagar which is slavery and embraces Jerusalem which is freedom.(Galatians 4:21-31)

  38. Please don’t ever stop what you are doing.
