Paul’s New Book

About an hour ago I wrote the last word of the last sentence of the last chapter of my new book. It is called The Gospel in Ten Words and it is ten revelations of God’s grace that describe the normal life of every believer (loved, forgiven, accepted, holy, righteous, new, etc.). Here is a work-in-progress picture of the cover and a synopsis…

What’s happening now?

As we speak, acres of rainforest are being decimated to make the paper that will be needed to bring this book to print. Ones and zeros are being harvested from the Internet in preparation for the related e-book. Book reviewers are cancelling holiday plans and bookstores and erecting new shelves in anticipation of its imminent release.

Ha!

What’s happening now is I’m packing to go on a short break to Christchurch, the town of my birth. I have been wanting to return to Christchurch ever since last year’s earthquake destroyed something like 70 percent of the inner city’s buildings. I am also looking forward to catching up with friends at the Grace and Glory Conference, and meeting new friends.

When will the book be released?

At present, individual chapters are being read by a group of friends. (My thanks to those of you who have already provided feedback. As for the rest of you, get a wriggle on!) At the same time the whole thing is being meticulously proofread by a professional editor.

So when will the book come out? I honestly don’t know. I’m impatient to birth this baby but I don’t want to push people. (Dear reading friends, please ignore what I just said.) It’ll be done when it’s done. But one way you can stay abreast of the news is to make sure you are an E2R subscriber. I’ll post announcements here.

One last thing

One of my chapter-readers, Peter Wilson of the UK, dropped a bombshell on me last weekend. When he saw the title of the book he said, “Are you aware that ‘the ten words’ is another name for the Ten Commandments?” I was not aware.

Oh fudge, I thought. I’ve written a gospel book people will think is based on the Ten Commandments. That’s hardly a good look for a preacher of grace!

I wondered if I had made a dreadful mistake with the title but Peter disagreed. “It could be a good thing. I think it’s really exciting and not a coincidence.”

Peter’s right. God knows I love lists and I’m pretty sure He was the one who gave me the idea for the book and the title. So what if people associated “ten words” with the law? No, I choose to trust that this is a God-thing.

Then that night, a confirmation. Camilla and I were watching an episode of The West Wing and President Bartlett was on a quest for a sound bite. “I need ten words,” he said over and over. “Josh, have you got the ten words? Who’s got ten words?” Not nine, not eleven, but ten words. It’s like my favorite president was saying, “You picked a great title!”

So the title stays. It’s The Gospel in Ten Words – not nine, not eleven, but ten – and you’re going to love it. I know so because I pinched everything in it from the Holy Spirit.

By the way, Peter kindly suggested a neat hook for the book:

“We’ve had the 10 words of the law; now receive the 10 words of grace.”

Nice one Peter.

  1. In the Bible, 10 is the representation of the whole, so I believe, these 10 words of grace is the representation of the whole idea of God about His Son, the personified grace of the Bible! I am excited to read your book, Bro. Paul! Thank you in advance and for sure God is glorified because His message will come across to the heart of everyone to be saved and enjoy the restored favor of God to humanity!

  2. I’m inclined to agree with Peter and your West Wing President. I don’t think it’s coincidence. Jehovah Sneaky as our church secretary likes to say, He’s kind of funny that way. 😉

  3. never though of it synonymously linked to the ten commandments until you mentioned it, perhaps I am not Law concious? LoL

it’s a great title by the way.

suggestion : if you can form the words “the gospel in ten words” in a Cross like formation, (like that of a scrabble tiles) that would be awesome.

    • Thanks for the suggestion SBG. I actually spent half a day with Scrabble pieces trying something like this but I wasn’t very successful. It just looked cluttered and “clever”. In frustration I threw the tiles down haphazardly in the arrangement you see above and voila! This looked far better than anything I did intentionally so I took a photo.

      • either way, minimalist wins! if st. Paul refuses to put eloquence in preaching the gospel, so can we too by reducing artistic designs. anyway, the content is going to count. will wait for the first publish. – grace and peace

  4. Awesome Paul, just awesome!

  5. Hi Pr Paul Elis…I can’t wait to soak myself in your book. Do u hv in iBook format?

Did you know – the Chinese word for the Cross is “ten words”? “十字” 架

      • I did not know that. That’s amazing! I hope to get the book translated into Chinese as soon as possible. My Chinese brothers and sisters are hungry for good news!

  7. I just ‘hate’ teasers like this! Because what I’ve read makes me want to read the whole thing NOW!! But now I’ve gotta exercise that hardest of things, patience. Seriously though, I’m really looking forward to reading it. Thank you.

  8. Love the title, I’m going to reserve Ten copies for family members

  9. I will buy the book, ship it to my home Singapore, just so I can share with my friends at New Creation Church that the grace revolution is going stronger as ever!

  10. Hey Paul. Congrats. was so excited to see news on your book. And I agree, it will hopefully draw those that live the 10 words of the law into greater grace 🙂 Im busy birthing a Masters dissertation, but mine is due in 3 weeks…hope your book will hit Cape Town shelves.

    • Thanks Lisa. If you can get Amazon you’ll be able to get the book. It’ll be available on Kindle too so you won’t even have to pay for shipping. Stay tuned! And all the best with your dissertation.

  11. I so can’t wait for this book as it will become the most wonderful gift in the world to first my sister, then others who are being saved. My sister has brought herself to say halleluiah and soon she will say “I am free”. So excited.

I can’t express how much I enjoy reading everything you write. I struggle with reading but what you write is so easy. It’s like food that you don’t even have to chew – kinda like cotton candy, melts in your mouth!

    Paul,

I have been folowing you for nearly three years. I share your posts with friends all the time. I am looking forward to the release of this book (I’ll download it on my kindle as soon as it’s released!) I advise a student-led Christian group at Elon University in North Carolina (USA) that so desperately needs to get a revelation of God’s Grace. Young people are held hostage to the law because “we” are so afraid that they will ruin their lives if they know they are free from condemnation.

I will be recommending 10 Words to the group to study. And I’ll be dropping a few to my friends too, Thank you for doing this!

By the way, I love the title!

  15. how exciting!
the title is definitely divine… because people who pick up your book – thinking its about how to live by the “big 10” – are the very people who need to read it and receive a revelation of grace!
and i just love it when God makes totally undeniable confirmations like that!
    🙂
