The Top 12 Promises on Eternal Security

I have begun listing the many promises in God’s Word regarding the eternal security of the believer. So far I’m up to 130 scriptures, with more to come. It’s a  wonderful, reassuring list, but too long to reproduce here. So for the sake of brevity I have pulled the top 12 promises guaranteeing your eternal salvation. These are promises to treasure. If you are uncertain and insecure, these promises will give you a confident assurance of your future.

1. Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. (John 5:24)

The insecure reads this backwards: “If I falter I’ll cross from life to death.” But Jesus said no such thing. You have crossed from death to life and it’s a one-way trip. You are not alive one day, dead the next, then alive again. The old has gone and the new has come.

2. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out… And this is the will of him who sent me; that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. (John 6:37, 39)

The insecure worry that “Jesus might cast me away if I don’t continue in the faith, endure, and avoid sin. If I wobble I’ll get the boot.” But Jesus said, “I will never cast out those who come to me.” What is the condition of not being cast out? Coming to Jesus. That’s it. Full stop. The end. No ifs, buts, or maybes.

3. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand… No one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. (John 10:27-30)

Here is a double-guarantee of your secure position: Jesus holds you and so does the Father. What about the sheep that wanders off? He doesn’t turn into a goat; he remains a sheep. And Jesus will find him for the Good Shepherd knows keeps his sheep.

4. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Rom 8:1)

The gift of no condemnation is without revocation (Rom 11:29). In Christ, you are eternally uncondemnable and unpunishable.

5. What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? … Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is the one who condemns? (Rom 8:31, 33-34)

The greatest set of rhetorical questions ever asked!

6. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 8:38-39)

To the Christian who has lost his way, God says, “Though you walk through the fire, I am with you. Though you make your bed in the depths, I am with you.” Truly nothing can separate us from the eternal grip of our Father’s love.

7. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Cor 1:8-9)

Who called us into fellowship? God. Who will keep us strong to the end so that we will be blameless? God. Who is faithful? God. You may not be a model of faithfulness, but he who called you is always faithful, “reliable, trustworthy, and therefore ever true to his promise, and he can be depended on” (to quote the Amplified Bible).

8. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. (2 Cor 1:21-22)

The indwelling Holy Spirit is the proof of the pudding and the end of all debate. We can’t trust our guarantees, but we can trust his.

9. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. (2 Cor 5:5)

Paul evidently thought this was so important – the Holy Spirit is your eternal guarantee – that he mentioned it twice.

10. And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of his return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you. (Php 1:6, AMP)

You can trust Jesus to finish what he began.

11. He has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. (2 Tim 1:9)

Has saved means it’s a done deal. Since your salvation is “not because of anything we have done,” nothing you do can unsave you.

12. Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. (Heb 7:25)

Jesus doesn’t do partial, temporary salvations. To quote the Amplified Bible, he saves completely, perfectly, finally, and for all time and eternity!

  1. This is the main reason i support this site. Its like lets get down to business and be free allready! I was having a lot of worry today, but reading these scriptures (that i know so well) again one after another is like eating a fine meal of ….life!

    I have often leaned on these words. It;s amazing that the same scriptures can be so powerful at all times if you simply believe them. It cant be wrong, because i end up praising God in happiness!

    I myself used to be adamantly opposed to eternal security. Not sure if it was my Pentecostal heritage (and I wasn’t even of the fringe variety women could wear make up, cut their hair etc) or what but I was sure opposed to once saved always saved. Thus I was always leery of Grace. Something in me, deep down knew that Grace and eternal security were inseparable. I understand now, my born again spirit was identifying with truth but my religious head was rejecting it. Funny thing is I never would actually listen to a detailed teaching of eternal security. To be fair sometimes I was presented Calvinism and sorry that isn’t the same teaching as once saved always saved Radical Grace. When I finally saw the truth of Grace I knew I had to address our security in Him. To be real if we receive the absolute Biblical truth of Hyper-Grace (super abounding Grace) we must also receive the absolute Biblical truth that a truly born again believer can never forfeit or walk away from or lose their salvation. Thanks for posting the true Gospel of Grace.

    • Interesting comment about how you never listened to a detailed teaching on security. I think this is probably true of most of us who have grown up with an insecure view. Vagueness and uncertainty go hand-in-hand with insecurity, but when you take the time to see what Jesus actually said, all uncertainty goes.

      • Exactly. It was Jesus words in John 10:27-29 that changed my view. It was when I was opened minded enough to hear a message that cut Cross grain to my religious head. Pastor Joseph prince has a two part message on the subject. I actually listened with a open heart and mind and brother were my eyes opened. So many won’t hear a true bible based message instead holding fast to a reactionary theology to the sin they see around them.

    Good word Paul, thank you for sharing. This post made me wonder your thoughts and if you’ve ever posted on the topic of predestination, election, “those he foreknew” type ideas?

    • I haven’t, but predestination does come up in the comments. Short version: God knew in advance that he would be inviting the Gentiles to his party.

        My main thought is I don’t think God randomly picked and chose in advance who would or wouldn’t be saved, like some puppet master. I think we are all invited, but not all choose to receive.

  5. If I believe fear is what keeps me and others from death, then I will refuse to accept this proof of eternal security and always search for a loophole. If I believe it is the love of the Father that keeps me, this strengthens me.

    I have a son who is doing a bit of wandering lately. It causes a mama to worry. Thank you for these verses of reassurance. Brings balm to my weary heart. God is faithful and will bring Him back and complete the work that He has already started.Thank you for these reminders!

  13. I find a lot of comfort in knowing that, in #8 and #9, as well as in Ephesians, the word “guarantee” comes from the greek word “Arrabon”. The use of “guarantee” as the translation is…inadequate. The better term for “arrabon” is “earnest money”: money given by a buyer to a seller as a “down payment” toward the purchase price, but if the buyer backs out of the deal, **the seller keeps the money**, while with a “down payment”, the money is returned. As an example, my wife and I wanted to rent a house with the option to buy, but the realtor/owner wanted $2000 earnest money because during the rental period, he couldn’t sell the house to anybody else. In the end, we bought a different house and he kept the $2000. During that time, he could freely spend the money on repairing the house (or on anything else) because he wasn’t obligated to save it for later refund if we decided not to buy the house.

    In other words, we “own” the Holy Spirit NOW and in a tangible way that prevents the Father from taking Him back. This is rather…strange, since it is God offering salvation and we who are buying it, and it is the seller (God) offering the “earnest” money as a means to confirm that the offer is not “too good to be true”. Not that He would: a lot of false theology is going to be refuted on The Last Day with the “theologians” muttering, “Well, huh…God actually DID what He SAID He would do!”

    • Thanks for that explanation Gerald. Some translations use the English word pledge, in place of guarantee, but much of the original meaning is lost in translation. Good illustration.

  18. What happens when one arrives at the doorway of truth after having lost almost everything they had.? Empty, broken and almost lifeless.. They have been a bad testimony to the Father’s name and His love. They bowed before the enemy. Left the savior. Got lost in a world where they don’t belong. Did almost everything they never intended to do. Came out of complete darkness and now they know that this all happened because they went their own way.. I don’t even have any words to say to Him in prayer.. Completely speechless..Where do such sheep stand..?

      In the exact same place the sheep who did everything proper and behaved themselves stand. We do not stand on our own merits or the lack of them. We stand on the blood.

  19. The Father’s grace and the completed work of Jesus are bigger than any scenario you can imagine. The only thing that limits Him is if we do not accept it, but if you want His grace He will never withhold it.

    I grew up with the concept that the church is like a club. Screw up, you’re out. Do right, you’re back in. My journey with God has been a struggle. I live in fear that if I screw up big time, God will leave me. I can’t trust me or the works. What happens I make too many mistakes that I can’t feel loved by God anymore. Why is the Church focus on works? Should we not focus on what God has done for me? Why can’t we relax and know whatever happens now or in the near future, we are in the loving arms of God. I want to live fearless knowing no matter what happens in my life, God has me in His hands.

    There are those who would unsettle us. We can say what is already said but it’s hard to remember and hard to hear. I’m glad that if God has loved us once…He will love us always. This is the message of Jesus and him crucified. amen.

    Thank you for these verses. I find it difficult to understand how someone who believes they can lose their salvation can actually find joy in their salvation. It seems there would be that constant question if you were still “saved” or not.
