How Do We Become Lukewarm?

Revelation 3:15

Many Christians are lukewarm, but not for the reasons they think.

“I don’t go to church enough, I don’t pray enough, I don’t witness enough.”

Let me stop you right there.

How much is enough? How many people do you need to lead to Jesus to stop him from vomiting you out of his mouth? The answer is zero, because Jesus will never vomit you out.

You are not lukewarm because of your productivity. But you may be lukewarm if you are mixing the white-hot love of God with the stone-cold demands of the law. (If this is news to you, take the Lukewarm Test now.)

How do we become lukewarm?

The Laodiceans were famously lukewarm, but anyone can be lukewarm. All you need is a little law.

In the Bible we find a great law that no one can keep. It’s a monumental law to crush egos and silence boasting mouths.

But the self-righteous take that great law and cut it down to manageable size. They belittle and cheapen God’s law, making themselves lukewarm in the process.

An oft-heard cry is that the modern church is being undone by cheap grace. The term cheap grace was coined by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in in his 1963 book The Cost of Discipleship.

Cheap grace, according to Bonhoeffer, leaves sinners unchanged and gives rise to moral laxity. The remedy is to preach costly grace, meaning grace with conditions. In other words, the cure for apathy is to mix law with grace.

This is toxic teaching. There is no such thing as cheap grace. The real damage is done by preaching cheap law.

In his 2013 book, One Way Love, Tullian Tchividjian wrote about the dangers of cheap law:

Contrary to what some Christians would have you believe, the biggest problem facing the church today is not ‘cheap grace’ but ‘cheap law’—the idea that God accepts anything less than the perfect righteousness of Jesus…A high view of the law produces a high view of grace. A low view of the law produces a low view of grace.

The fundamental problem with cheap law is “it nullifies grace,” said John Dink in a 2012 essay.

Cheap law weakens God’s demand for perfection, and in doing so, breathes life into the old creature and his quest for a righteousness of his own making.

If you want to make people lukewarm, the fastest way is to preach cheap law.

Cheap law may be packaged as the pursuit of holiness or the spiritual disciplines. It could be an emphasis on the sacrifices you bring or the promises you make. Cheap law may take many forms, but it invariably bears the nauseating stench of self-righteousness.

Why were the Laodiceans lukewarm?

Anyone can be self-righteous and lukewarm, but the Laodiceans were lukewarm because they were Jewish. They had left the synagogue, but they hadn’t entered the kingdom. They had heard the good news of grace, but they hadn’t let go of the law.

The Laodicean church was Jewish in the same way the Jerusalem church was Jewish. But unlike the Jerusalem Jews, the Laodicean Jews were still bound to the law. Lacking a full revelation of what Christ had done, they were stuck between two covenants.

This is why Jesus says they were neither cold (fully under law) nor hot (fully under grace). They were living under law and grace, which is like having a cold bath and hot one at the same time.

The Laodiceans were not the only ones. To this day, many remain confused about the covenants. Their confusion manifests in comments like, “We need to balance God’s grace with works,” and “God gives us grace to keep his commands.”

In the pursuit of balance, mixed-up preachers give mixed-up messages and the result is mixed-up believers.

The remedy to this sort of lukewarmness is not to preach cheap law, but to preach pure and undiluted grace.

The way to be free from covenant confusion is to trust Jesus with all your heart,

You are always spot on Paul. Keep up the great work.

Well done Paul. One of your better messages. Clear, concise and compelling.

  3. Jesus taught & modelled – the life of a born-again true Follower – believing on him__ love God & your neighbour. Yet, the two ‘new’ laws he spoke in the NC were not new; he gave them to point us back to the encompassing Law of God & how it affects Saints today. He was saying, the Law of God affected Saints in his day & for the years before that… to a point when God gave Moses the Law of God.

The Law of God was not given to bring light to right & wrong. It’s sole purpose was to bring light to what sin really is; in both worlds after the Garden experience – for those who love God & those who don’t. It’s the flesh that wants to emphasize righteousness, holiness & spiritual discipline – but it’s done with a mind for the love of God & our neighbour but the love self; regards the Law of God.

The Laodiceans were living their life in God in manner that did not included God; to the point were God purposed to remind them & us today that the things of this world – the world he invited them & us out of – are not what brings us closer to him. Thus: God’s need to leave an account in the road-map [complete bible].

Thank you for your summary: The remedy for lukewarmness is not to preach cheap law, but to preach pure and undiluted grace! Grace is so easy that some folks don’t understand it; UNMERITED FAVOR OF GOD!!!!! The awesome thing is that we all get this wonderful FAVOR OF GOD ALL BECAUSE OF CALVARY!!!!!!!

    • Brandon Petrowski // March 29, 2019 at 3:13 pm // Reply

      Very well said.

    • Amen! Unmerited Favor!

Here’s a thought. Grace is not meant to be the answer to the Law. Grace simply IS what IS and always has been. From God’s point of view, the law was never necessary. Think about it. Does the law help God understand us better? Does it help God love us more? Does the law show God how to relate to us? Of course not. God has always been about reaching into our darkness and helping us find our way back to him. The law was something the children of Israel demanded in their fallen understanding, and God met them at that stage in their darkened minds, knowing that as time went on they (we) would have the means to see a clearer picture of him and not need to relate to him on those terms anymore. We need to grow up and get off the milk.

It’s a sad reality that what we think of as the church today, modern American Christianity, has basically missed the Gospel and is preaching something else. It is promoting religion and the Gospel of Jesus is about religion’s irrelevance and the unveiling of the gracious love of God that has always been since before the foundation of the world. This love didn’t change with the fall of Adam. We just became blinded to it.

“we just become blinded to it”, that’s so right jason b
I like to say, “men misunderstood the nature of our relationship”, from there I like to say,
“Faith is the knowledge of our relationship, and the works of Faith are our response to that knowledge”.
The centurion had great Faith because he knew the relationship between words spoken by someone in authority and the outcome of those words. “just speak and it will be done”.
If Adam had understood the nature of the relationship between God and himself he would have run back to the Father.
Gods sacrificial love already existed but he was blinded by condemnation.

      • Amazing truth Jason, thank you as I see this too, Grace off the start for all of us. Has been in the Old Testament, that I call the first Testament, grace unveiled, hidden not seen yet there the entire time

In the new Testament (Second) Grace revealed in mercy and truth that has been since the first day in the fall of Adam, for God had mercy on them and did not kill them right away. For what he meant when said if you eat from that tree is that you will put you on the path to death, and all creation with it.

God Father, Yeh was never a Tyrant and did not say I God will kill you, just that you will surely die if eat from that one and only tree.
They did in unbelief and we see death ever since.
Well God himself in Son the only exact image of himself in flesh and blood reversed the curse the enemy lucifer put upon flesh and blood. For all flesh dies, so be dead to it

A steak in growing up to eat in maturity Hebrews 5:12-chapter 6 about where we are, or might be drinking the milk and not eating the meat. So eat Jesus and drink his shed blood and be renewed permanently by Father of risen Son for everyone today to turn to in belief to seer

Thanks as I am learning and only Father and Son knowing

Forecast for today, God Reigns as Son shimes

Richard, my brother, I believe you just summed up what the Gospel is all about… “If Adam had understood the nature of the relationship between God and himself he would have run back to the Father.” Amen!

This LACK of understanding the nature of God’s relationship with us is what Jesus came to address. And he did it with stealth, (he tricked the devil), he did it in such a way that he took our darkest, ugliest moment and turned it into the means of our adoption into the Trinity. He is an amazing redemptive mastermind.

He made it so the requirement for fellowship with the Father wasn’t religious fervor, mental theological capacity, faithful service, good works, a kind heart, the ability to resist temptation, or baptism, or bible knowledge, or even conjuring up faith… he did the remarkable, he made it so that the only per-requisite to qualifying for fellowship with the Father is the rejection of Jesus. That is why it’s important to see that all of humanity participated in the crucifixion of Christ. He took that rejection, consumed it, and turned it into blessing. He arose victorious for our sake. As if to say, “now you’ve got nothing left to through at me. I took it all. Ignore me, hate me, or find your rest in my love, the choice is yours”.

      • jason b amazing post! Loved it. My heart jumped as I read ‘God has always been about reaching into our darkness and helping us find our way back to him’…that right there helps me understand more about what returning ( Is 30:15) means. Thank you for posting.

  5. If you think you need to keep the law, you need a full dose of it to finally realize it is not possible for you to keep it perfectly, as it demands. Then the fruit of death in your life from trying to keep the law will convince you of your need for pure Grace.

  6. Marjorie Keenan // March 28, 2019 at 4:40 am // Reply

Right on Paul!! When you really understand GRACE, your life will change. My relationship with God has mushroomed and His promises become reality every day, as I speak His word over my life, knowing how much He loves me and how acceptable I am to Him because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross.

  7. Sir with all humility, I don’t think the issue of the Laodicean church is that of law and grace. I believe it was an issue of works based on self confidence and self reliance. As it was the case of Babylon the great in, Revelation 18:7 and the parable of a certain rich man in Luke 12:16-21.

    • The Laodiceans were spectacularly self-confident. They literally built monuments to their self-reliance. But they were also Jewish, thus their self-righteousness was likely the same sort as the other religious Jews we read about in the Bible. It is significant that this church was unique in that it experienced no religious persecution from other Jews. Why not? They must’ve been observant of the law.

    • Marjorie Keenan // March 28, 2019 at 7:58 am // Reply

The law is works and self-righteousness. Grace is total confidence in what Jesus did for us on the cross. Self-confidence comes from knowing who you are in Christ and putting the power and authourity that He has given to us in His name, and in the word of God, into action. Knowing His unconditional love empowers you to move into a trusting and intimate relationship. Law is death–grace is the Spirit of Life. Law caused sin to abound..grace causes sin to diminish.

    • In the context of the letter to Laodicea, we can see the problem was the people in this church were not ‘saved’, not that they were believers who weren’t doing enough Christian activities or too much sinfulness in their lives (works). They were acting like believers/ appeared as believers (lukewarm, a little of both), so weren’t doing ALL the Jewish laws (cold), but in their hearts they didn’t know Jesus (hot). The letter is a repetition of examples of this – “you SAY “I am rich” (say they are believers/ have Jesus) “and have become wealthy” (know the truths of God) but they really are “wretched” (sinful), “poor” (without Jesus), “blind” (cannot see Jesus), “naked” (not clothed in righteousness, which happens when you believe). “I advise you to buy” (accept Jesus, He paid the price so the cost to buy is free) “from Me gold” (purity of the saints) “and white garments” (Jesus gives us a white robe washed in His blood when we believe) “so that you may cloth yourself” (it is a choice to believe Jesus, choose to put it on/ cloth yourself with it) “so your nakedness will not be revealed” (cover yourself with the blood of Jesus in place of your own efforts which is nakedness) “eye salve so that you may see” (they are blind so need the remedy so they will see Jesus. Ask Jesus to reveal himself to you and you will see Him). “Therefore repent” (believe the truth of Jesus). “I stand at the door and knock”…’open the door’ (they haven’t let Jesus in yet)… and “I will come in to him and will dine with him” (to dine/ to eat/ to teach truth). No words to tell them to do more community service, to help the poor, to do bible studies, etc. No recommendations to improve their ‘works’ or to stop certain sins, but a flood of advice to put on Jesus.

What a refreshing stance on an ongoing problem! I will never be good enough in anything I try and accomplish, Jesus had done it all. I will try and live for him and follow his commandments because I want to, not because it lifts me up… I’m already there!!

I’ve noticed, as of late that more and more television preachers are starting to preach the Gospel of Grace. I remember just 10 years ago that I was being fed the law constantly by preachers on TBN, and at that time I was going through a tremendous amount of stress and I felt so condemned. I had no idea that it was the condemnation from the law that was causing me to so fearful and bound. Now that I’ve been taught the Gospel of Grace, I test every sermon I hear, and I’ve noticed i haven’t heard a lot of fire and brimstone preaching in a while, but I’m hearing more and more grace. Thank you for your writings. They are a blessing to me.

    • Marjorie Keenan // March 28, 2019 at 8:13 am // Reply

Well put Michelle. I too have experienced change and I test every sermon as I will not receive any message of law again. Grace has enhanced my relationship with God and removed fear and condemnation. I am seeing answers to prayer that are above and beyond what I could even ask for or imagine. Many healings in my own life as well as those I pray for. God’s plan for mankind has always been rooted in unconditional love and He has beautiful plans for us. The Garden of Eden was amazing and Jesus made a way for us to walk in it again. The ministry of law and the 10 commandments was a ministry of death and it showed mankind the need for a Saviour. Law ended with the coming of Jesus and we now live under the amazing Covenant of Grace! To return to living under law is to say that Jesus died in vain. I for one will never forget His benefits and the full life He has restored to us through His death and resurrection. God bless you as you discover the fullness of His grace.

      • More preachers are preaching grace based message. I have been told by well meaning preachers that we are living in the last days where our love will grow cold. More and more people will seek out teachers who will tell them what want to hear according to 2 Tim 4 : 2.
This lead me to wonder if I am grace based message are wrong

      • Marjorie Keenan // March 29, 2019 at 7:07 am //

Julian we have been living in end times since Jesus ascended into heaven. I believe that hearts are growing cold because the message of pure grace is not being taught. Apostle Paul tried to tell the churches that they should not return to law and they didn’t heed Him. The church has been so sin-conscious because of this and they have overlooked the finished work of Jesus on the cross. He did it all for us, forgave sin, healed our bodies and provided a way to have complete wholeness. The problem is that man cannot understand “unconditional love” so they put their own conditions on it and they continue to work to please God and to receive from Him, according to their interpretation of love. Jesus made us acceptable in the sight of God and the church is still judging and categorizing sin. They can’t understand that Grace and knowing you are loved, causes sin to diminish. The law caused sin to abound. All of this is written in the Bible, but has been very misunderstood. Look up Scripture on Grace versus law and you will see what I mean. Yes these preachers are well-meaning, but they are wrong, just as the Pharisees were. There are many good Grace preachers and I implore you to seek them out and hear what they are saying. It will change your whole relatiinship with the Trinity! Creflo Dollar has been doing great teaching on Grace and of course Paul Ellis. I had revelation of Grace several years ago and these men are confirming what Holy Spirit taught me the. Love it! God bless.

  10. Good stuff.

  11. Another word for lukewarm is mild. It is therefore very wrong to say that Yeshua is meek and mild. That is a form of blasphemy actually. We are to be meek, which means obedient to God The Father. Yeshua is meek. He is decidedly nor mild. He is very passionate. We are to be passionate. If we are mild he will spit us out as lukewarm.

    • This is a recipe for works-based salvation, anxiety, and despair. The good news is we are saved and kept by grace alone. God does not judge us according to our passion, but in light of his Son. More here.

    • Colleen AndAaron Gleason // April 5, 2019 at 8:29 am // Reply

Lukewarm comes from blending hot and cold. Jesus also said He prefers people to be either hot or cold. If those temperatures meant obedience then He would rather people be fully obedient or fully disobedient instead of partially obedient. It makes no sense when read that way. The question that needs asked is what is the hot and cold that Jesus is okay with that when blended creates problems?
Meek does not mean obedient. I’m not sure who gave you that definition. Meek means humble, patient, gentle kind and longsuffering. All scripturally given traits of Jesus. Mild can also mean gentle, again a scripturally supported trait of the Savior. Someone has tried to trick you and draw you away from the truth of the Savior’s character. Jesus was very much meek and mild.

Tremendous Revelation!! Would like your input on Romans12:1 on believers called to offer their bodies as living Sacrifices? Appreciate you! Thanks

    • Star Saiyan // March 29, 2019 at 2:23 pm // Reply

      Hi there!

Paul spent the first 11 chapters of Romans explaining our need for God’s grace, the fulfillment Jesus’s death and resurrection did for us, and God’s promise of faithfulness. In view of that, one of the first responses of new believers is, “Now what?” Paul answers with Romans 12:1 (hence the “therefore”).

Paul’s response is to “offer your bodies as living sacrifices […] to God” In sacrifice, you give up something. Basically, Paul wants new believers (and us) to let God’s grace run in our lives by “surrendering” our lives to Christ. This is done by “renewing […] your mind.” (12:2)

      • So true. Romans is an amazing book that I can’t get enough of.

Just like what happened to the apostle Paul, we all need our view of God dismantled and replaced with a revelation of our Father through Christ. Which is exactly what Jesus has set out to do.

Brother Paul Ellis, bless you for your work, and this site!

  14. Thanks much for this topic, as I am learning to not be under Law, just uphold it as Romans 8:31 tells me. As only Father and Son can reveal it. Todays forecast God Reigns and Son Shines
    Same forecast forever

  15. I love the picture of the faucet. Sadly, it pictures the state of current mainstream Christian teaching quite well. And people will keep gravitating to a lukewarm mixture of law and grace because it’s perceived as an answer to the ILLUSION of God that our fallen minds have fixated on. We are convinced God is someone he is not. That is what Jesus’ ministry was all about – “You think this way about God, but really my Father is like… You’ve got us all wrong. You’ve been deceived. No one knows the Father but me, and you don’t know God and have never seen or heard him”. Wow! Strong words. Let that sink in, until Jesus – really until Pentecost and the imparting of the Holy Spirit- everyone had been relating to a God of their limited understanding that they didn’t, COULDN’T truly know. THAT is the problem God is faced with – How do I get my cherished ones, created in my image, back into holy (unique, one of a kind) fellowship with me to share in the love between the Father, Son and Spirit that they are now missing out on because they view me through a deceived mind (they are blind to the truth). This was the issue the Lord has set out to fix from the beginning – Adam in the bushes, afraid and hiding for no reason at all, other than what was in his head.
If religion has left you wanting, good! The law was never, ever an answer to this problem. The law is merely there to show us that being blind (living in darkness) really stinks and our blindness needs a cure. God’s answer to THE problem is totally APART FROM the law. It is simple faith – believing what is true. Not creating something but believing something. That God is crazy about you right where you stand, right now, regardless of what you’ve done – you can come out of the bushes. Jesus is the answer to THE problem.

      • jason b // April 1, 2019 at 3:26 am //

Bless you, Marjorie. The Holy Spirit is on the move, turning on the lights for people in the next room. We are starting to rediscover the truth that had a hold of the hearts of the apostles and early Church. That Jesus, his Father and the Spirit are in the business of bringing us into what they have always had since before the world – a relationship, abounding with life, love and union. We were created to share in that, to participate in that family. That is where we belong, and we are lost until we find ourselves there. The divine determination of the fellowship of this Trinity is that we come to see God for who he is. He will settle for nothing less. He will never stop pursuing us to that end. The most beautiful relationship we could imagine (the one that exists between the Father, Son and Spirit) is aimed at you and me with a relentless, hot burning love that will never stop.

The problem is we don’t see ourselves as “in” that relationship. We think we are outside it still. We don’t get that they are sharing their relationship with us. We can be assured that they are not relying on the law to relate to each other in their relationship, so why would we want to bring the law in with us. We need to come home and drop the law like a bad habit.

    • Adam saw truth after eating from that tree too, after seeing Eve not die right away as he thought would be. So he ate to and immediately knew he is dead now. So grabbed onto her and ran and hid.
As I know I have too, done this and hid. Still to this day, being in a sin body that is not redeemed yet and fights tooth and nail against God’s Spirit he placed in me and you and all that are turned to belief too.

How to let go and not try to do, what none of us can do, that be perfect.

So I want tro enter his rest too. Whenever I think I have, here comes that Old man again that is not me anymore according to Father to trick me again. Learning this 2 Cor 10:5-6

Obedience per Christ was by Faith to Father alone, as Father is hardly mentioned anymore.
Yet I see in each Epistle Father and Son are mentioned as two, not just one in Spirit and Truth

      Thanks for the inspiration

  16. I don’t understand where you’re taking this line of reasoning but won’t it ultimately lead you to nullify what Jesus came to fulfill? Paul’s teachings on grace and law are often misunderstood, and Peter warns us about doing exactly that. Peter says, “Take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.”

What does it mean to be lawless? What is the error of lawless people who lose their own stability? Are you suggesting that someone who is full of grace requires that they be void of law? How is grace the opposite of law? Isn’t it a quantum leap to assume that grace is cold water and Law is hot water, or that the two blended together in some combination are the lukewarm thing which God hates?

It would appear that the text is clearly saying to the church that two very useful things were being joined together to create something that was not even good for drinking because it was awful tasting. Both of these things were very useful prior to being joined together.

“Would that you were either cold or hot!”

    • Marjorie Keenan // April 3, 2019 at 6:17 am // Reply

The law showed man his need for a Saviour. The Israelites came out of the wilderness completely unscathed by the experience because of God’s supernatural provision and grace. They decided they didn’t want to be graded on God’s goodness, they wanted the credit on their own. God let them have it their way, but instead of having relationship with Him, they began to worship idols and sin abounded. The law appeared, but no man could ever keep the requirements of the law. If man was to have relationship with God by being perfect and sinless through laws, it was never going to happen. That is why Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the law for us. The Bible says the law would end with the coming of Mary’s seed. In Corinthians the Ten Commandments are called a ministry of death and it is clear that salvation cannot be attained by works. The law was death..grace is the Spirit of Life. You cannot mix death and life and be stable. Grace is based on what Jesus did..not on what we do. We need only to believe. Grace actually causes sin to diminish. The law depended entirely on works. Jesus forgave all the sins of the world, past, present and future and said He would remember them no more..for His sake. He took care of the sin issue. Sin is no longer imputed to man. This is all in the Bible, but the god of this world has successfully blinded many from the real fullness and truth of GRACE and UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Sin was never the issue with God. Look at all the heroes of the Bible..not one was without sin…David, a man after Gods own heart, commited murder, adultery and was a liar.
It was all about LOVE from the foundation of the earth! The Father wants relationship with us! Nothing man would do would surprise God…He knew it all before He created us, but He chose to make us anyway.

    • Since Jesus fulfilled the law, we nullify what He fulfilled when we try to fulfill it.

The reason grace and law are opposed to each other is this – keeping the law requires me to constantly assess myself to determine where I may fall short (self focused), whereas grace shows me I never fall short in Jesus (Jesus focused). Being Jesus focused is Christianity.

In 2 Cor 3:7 the law is described as the ministry of death written and engraved on stones. Titus 3:7 says that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. So grace and law are as opposed as life and death.

You end your quote of the text with a period, but the sentence goes on to say, “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him [be] the glory both now and forever.” Again, this is Jesus focused.

When we measure our righteousness by the way we keep the law we fall from.grace.
      Said another way. . .
When someone is full of grace they don’t measure themselves by the law.
      And another. . .
My life is not void of the law, my life is void of condemnation via the law.
Anything, any action, that is not motivatated by the relationship made possible by faith in Jesus is sin.
Even good works are sin if the motivation to perform them doesn’t come from the knowledge of our Fathers love for us. Our Father’s his love is shown through Jesus and not the giving of the law. The law is not bad, the law brought to a place of thorough awareness, “I need a saviour”.
Thank you for the law, the law is good.

    • Good news, teotebasecamp: No one can EVER nullify what Jesus came to fulfill. It’s done. It’s on the books. It cannot be undone. “It is finished.” For us, you and me, Jesus put everything on a whole new level, that of simply believing instead of achieving. In the ministry of Jesus, the Holy Spirit finally had a man on the scene that would listen and trust him. A man who could walk and know the Father’s love every step of the way. That is what Jesus came to do on our behalf – be that human that we couldn’t. Jesus didn’t live a single moment in obedience to law. Being in step with the Father, there was finally a man on earth that could enter into the deep darkness of Adam’s fallen mess and gather you and me and take us back to the Father with him to be where we belong.

A relationship with Jesus is one that is as apart from the law as life is from death. You can’t hug Jesus with your arms full of your good works. We need to drop them on the ground and enjoy the embrace of Grace.

  17. This Law thing has always bothered me since my Grace awakening several years ago. I have wanted a simple way of understanding and explaining what it is. Yesterday I heard this; “If my behaviour, either good or bad, causes me to think God will treat me differently…then I have touched the Law. ”

This understanding of the Law frees us from condemnation and guilt when we fail to live up to expectations we put on ourselves. It also stops us from thinking that by doing the ‘good’ stuff, ie praying, reading scriptures, etc has any bearing on our complete acceptance and ability to receive from God. It opens up our hearts and minds to a God with arms wide open, willing us to come find our rest in Him. This just makes me smile.

Hey Leanne it has been a long time! Love your post! Most of my Christian walk I have known something was wrong with the gospel as it was being taught. I couldn’t put my finger on it and had nobody to discuss things with. In 2014, I started writing a book, and the Holy Spirit began to fill in the blanks for me. I thought the book was ready to be published and then Holy Spirit spoke to me and He said, “Oh no, there is another chapter yet!” He began to open me up to the fullness of grace, the story of Job, the error of the Sovereignty message etc. The book took another year, as He took me on this journey of revelation and understanding. It was during this time that He led me to Escape to Reality and I heard Paul teaching on these subjects. I was seeing confirmation of what Holy Spirit was teaching me. As I have come into the truth about wrong it is to mix grace and law, my life has changed dramatically and I experience the love of God like never before. God relates to us only under the covenant of Grace. When we truly understand what Jesus did at the cross, we know OUR REDEEMER LIVES! 😃😄

    • Thank You for this saying

“If my behaviour, either good or bad, causes me to think God will treat me differently…then I have touched the Law. ”

I see this truth, Thank you as we grow up in Father and Son, thanks

  18. Hello Marjorie, bless you for your passion and life.
I am loving the good news about how we are cherished, accepted, worthy in Christ Jesus, and how much God just adores each and every one of us. This truth is taking hold in the world today. The amazing news of a good God, a Father…no shadow, no turning, He cannot be anything but good, is making such a difference to heavy hearts that have been bound up by religion and law mentality. Believers are beginning to return and rest ( Is 30:15)…to smile and live free in His Grace! It’s a bit scary for sure to believe God is so good, but I’ve been on the other side for too long and it hasn’t worked.
I wonder what a difference a full scale acceptance of a wonderful loving God will make to the whole cosmos!

      So true Leanne,
I like to remind myself and others that words spoken over Jesus by our Father, “you are my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased” were said to us all.
The enemy(the defeated one) does everything in his power to convince us otherwise.
Dispite our own conscience or the acusations of the religious we will always be the loved ones of our Father.
I pray for my words and thoughts to be directly from our Father in heaven. . . the rock solid wisdom and understanding through the Holy Spirit and not “another spirit”.
“On this will the kingdom of heaven be built”

Lianne it is so exciting to hear people talking this way about God’s love. About 30 years ago the Lord gave me a prophetic word that He was going to bring a revelation of His unconditional love to the world..a revelation that, at that time in history, they would not even be able to perceive. It is happening now and my heart just leaps with joy! Praise God for His beautiful plan for mankind..bye bye religion!

      • Loving all these posts. So encouraged to read of your prophetic word Marjorie and feel the joy too. Praise God indeed.

When we hear the Gospel it should cause a joyous effect in our emotions, and our emotions have an effect on our whole being. I remember the, ‘don’t be a luke warm christian or God will spew you out of His mouth’ warnings being preached as Gospel, filling young believers hearts with fear, such a negative destructive emotion. A lot of the preaching/teaching I’ve heard has been fear based, very sad.

Thank God for this time in history when people are free (mostly) to question answers that haven’t been Good News. Thank God for the hyper Grace preachers and teachers. Thank God for His Spirit at work in our lives. God is good.

Agreed, Marjorie. There is a grand reality that is becoming perceivable. A mystery. The character and nature of God at the core of his being from all eternity has been a loving relationship shared between the Father, Son and Spirit. This love is what birthed creation and we exist inside the scope of this love.

The law has a role in leading us to Christ. But let it be known far and wide that “Christ is the end of the law”! I believe the day will come when everyone will understand these things – every eye will see and every tongue will confess who Jesus is and always has been.

      • Agreed as we each grow in his unfathomable grace to our old man flesh but revealed in Spirit and Truth to us each from him our Love, as said by Jesus in John 4:23-24 to us thanks man, me learning still

This is very clear. So it is possible to be very ‘busy for God’ but lukewarm. So Many questions answered here. Thank you Paul.

Thanks for all the comments; great teaching Paul Ellis. I’m seeing more and more that the Body of Christ (His Church/His Beautiful Bride) needs to get her head on straight….PROBLEM, she (the church) keeps trying to do this, forgetting He (Jesus) is the Head! He is Perfect! He saved us by His works, that are finished, He is our High Priest, King, the Worthy Lamb (Who was slain), and He walked under His Holy Law and fulfilled it (as only He could) and He became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him, He then gave us His Life (Resurrected, Glorious Life)! A brand New Creation born in a day, in Christ Jesus! Yes we are; He did it! When He said, “IT IS FINISHED”, it was and is sooooooo finished. I’m learning to just be a part of His Body and let Him be the Head! Our minds need to be renewed unto Him, and by Him. No, we cannot do this either. We need to sit down, enter His Rest, by faith in Him (not faith in faith) and follow Him, each and every minute of each and every day! He is the author and finisher of our faith. Amen and Amen!

    • Yes Amen more than a million times over again
He did it, we believe it is done by him from Father the two as won (One) form us, to stand no matter what, in his love and mercy given us first
      Thank you

  21. We also see the warning against mixing law with grace in the following 2 scriptures.

    Romans 11:6
“And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work”

    James 3:10-12
“Out of the same mouth proceed blessing (Grace) and cursing (condemnation under the law). My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water (Grace) and bitter (condemnation under the law) from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.”

    • Interesting point. Thank you for highlighting those verses from that perspective. I never really made that connection before. I like it.

    • Work is done still, just not ours
Gal 2:20-21 Thanks for the insight to not tripping up on work of self we think we should be doing or else attitude of flesh nature inherited in the flesh.
Taken care of by Jesus, not the flesh part, the new Heart and Spirit part
      Ezekiel 36:26

Thanks that was a good listing of truth about Law and Grace, to me is like Oil and Water does not mix, not naturally anyway. So no flesh can or will please God. But Son’s and he did not do that by flesh only trust in Father he left us and leaves us to contend with. Having a relationship that teaches us trust and not of flesh stuff. At least this is being done in and through me by his Love for us all to me this I see

    This is excellent!

    • God just love us all, period, otherwise Son would not have done allowed what got done to him for us to get new life in him by belief to his work for us. It is finished, and in his resurrection we get the will Hebrews 9:14-17 Amazing he did it, I didn’t, nor anyone else. So start from scratch God just love you, you, you, you, me and all the world of people.

Why else would what is done in Son ever be done?

I am floored still, not deserving yet received, and do not always act as if have. So I see to just move on toward the future, standing in the present being thankful all sin is forgiven, where we are given belief to stand in no matter what, standing in trust not works as taught to do by this world
