The Measureless, Unchangeable Love of God
What Columbus can teach us about exploring the love of God

“He loves me. He loves me not.” 🌼
This is how some people view the love of God.
“Sometimes God is good to me, sometimes he isn’t. Sometimes he gives, sometimes he takes away. Sometimes he’s happy with me, sometimes he’s angry. Sometimes he’s for me, sometimes he’s against me.”
But Jesus isn’t fickle, nor is his Father. You never saw Jesus heal someone and then withdraw his healing the next day. Nor did he turn the wine back into water.
God never changes. The God who gave us his Son is always good to us.
You may say, “I know God is good.” But do you know that God is good to you all the time? There is never a day, an hour, or a moment when he is bad to you. His love for you is as constant as sunlight. ☀️
God’s love is not only unchangeable, it is measureless. His love is greater than words. It’s so big that it can only be defined by what it isn’t. God’s love is uncontainable, unfathomable, unconditional.
The Apostle Paul prayed that we would know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge (see Eph. 3:19). Think about that phrase: surpasses knowledge.
I have been a Christian for more than 50 years. I think I have a pretty good handle on the love of Christ, but apparently I don’t. You don’t either, because his love exceeds our knowing.
You and I are like Columbus, who visited the New World yet never saw America’s great lakes, rivers, and forests. He died without ever seeing the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Canyon, or the Mississippi Valley. 🏔️
In truth, he didn’t really see America at all!
After multiple ocean crossings, Columbus saw more than most Europeans could ever have imagined. He probably bragged to his friends that he was the world’s foremost expert on America, yet he barely knew anything.
It’s the same with us. We think we know about the love of God, but in truth we’re still on the edge of the map. We will spend eternity exploring the limitless reaches of our Father’s love. 🗺️
So enough with this “He loves me, he loves me not” nonsense. Settle it in your heart that your heavenly Father loves you more than you can know or imagine. His love for you is relentless and unchangeable. It is furious and unfailing.
The ragamuffin evangelist Brennan Manning once said, “I could more easily contain Niagara Falls in a teacup than I can comprehend the wild, uncontainable love of God.” 🌊
Jesus knew that Peter would deny him and that Judas would betray him, yet he loved his disciples to the end. His love for them never quit.
His love for you never fails. ❤️

We have arrived at the halfway point but it’s not too late to join our Tour of Thessalonians. Here’s what participants are saying:
“I love this Bible Study!”
“I am loving these lessons!”
“Paul, I thank you for this Bible study. For the first time in my grace walk with the Lord, I’m able to fellowship and share with others on the same frequency.”
