“God Wants You Well” by Andrew Wommack

Back in the 1970s, Andrew Wommack prayed for a four year old boy who was sick. The boy died. At the funeral, Wommack was tempted to comfort the parents with religious clichés like, “God allowed this,” “He works in mysterious ways,” and “God needed your son in heaven.” But he couldn’t do it. He didn’t think that was being honest with the Bible. Instead, he said this:

The Lord did not kill your son. He didn’t allow this to happen. Satan was the one who snuffed his life out. Even though the devil may have won this battle, he didn’t win the war. (p.45)

Wommack walked away from that experience motivated to learn. Evidently he’s learned much because he’s spent the past four decades healing the sick and even raising a few dead. I imagine that thousands of people have received physical healing as a result of his ministry. In his recent book, God Wants You Well, Wommack distills some of the lessons he’s learned about healing the sick. Here’s lesson number one:

“It’s God’s will to heal every single person every single time.” (p.89)

Healing is a done deal. It’s part of the salvation package. Look at the meaning and use of the word “saved” (sozo) in the Bible and you will find that it covers forgiveness, healing, and deliverance. It means to be “made whole” in every aspect of life. In Psalms 103:3 and 1 Peter 2:24, the benefits of salvation are described as the forgiveness of sins and physical healing. You cannot separate one from the other. It is offensive to Jesus and His finished work to treat healing as merely a fringe benefit. There are at least 17 occasions in the Gospels, where Jesus healed everyone who came to Him sick. It was His habit to heal everyone!

So why isn’t everyone healed today? What about that four year old boy? Is God in charge or isn’t He?

“We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.” (1 Jn 5:19)

Sickness is part of sin’s curse. You could say it was Satan’s ministry, his evil gift to the world. Jesus said the devil is a thief (Jn 10:10) and he’ll try and rob your health. Yet many believe that sickness is from God. They think that God makes us sick to us to teach us humility. According to Wommack this makes about as much sense as thinking that God would cause us to get drunk and murder people to teach us character. He no more leads us into sickness than He leads us into sin. So here’s the next lesson:

“In the same way that I should resist sin, I should resist sickness.” (p.36)

Nobody ever wonders, “Lord, is it your will for me to sin?” Neither should we wonder whether it’s His will for us to be sick. It isn’t! But if you are uncertain about this – if you think sickness is all part of His mysterious plan – it’ll make you passive. You won’t resist the devil and he won’t flee from you (Jas 4:7). Your neighbors will come to you sick and you’ll send them to the doctor. (I’m not against doctors!) They’ll come battling mental illness and you’ll send them to the psychiatrist. But Jesus didn’t carry our griefs and infirmities to turn us into advice-givers. The Bible tells us that He…

“…gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.” (Gal 1:4)

The Bible describes this age as evil and the whole world as being under the control of the evil one. This is why people get sick and die. God’s solution is found in the cross. Through His atoning sacrifice, Jesus provided us with everything we need to overcome sin and sickness. So why aren’t we seeing more people healed? Perhaps the number one reason is unbelief arising from ignorance. Many people – Christians included – aren’t fully aware of what Christ did on our behalf. Wommack is quick to admit his own failings in this area:

“I’ve failed. I don’t see healing come to pass. I’ve seen some people very close to me die, family and friends I’ve loved with all of my heart. I’ve had to accept partial responsibility. It’s a complex issue. I’m not saying that it was all my fault, all their fault, or anybody’s fault. We’re still learning… (On one occasion where a girl died) I believe I did fail… But am I condemned by that? No, I’m not condemned at all. I believe that God loves me.” (pp.87-88)

One of the things I admire about Wommack in this book is that he’s more interested in finding answers than in making excuses. How refreshing! He wants to know “what works?” while others are making theologies to explain “why doesn’t it work?” Those who refuse to believe that God is in the healing business often point to Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor 12:7) or Timothy’s tummy troubles (1 Ti 5:23). Wommack deals with these and other chestnuts (e.g., Trophimus, Paul’s eyes) thoroughly. A “thorn in the flesh” is an Old Testament idiom (Num 33:55, Jud 2:3) that refers to persecution, not sickness, while Paul told Timothy to drink fortified wine and avoid the local water so he wouldn’t get “Delhi Belly” when he travelled.

Perhaps the most interesting part of Wommack’s book is his discussion of the laws of the kingdom that govern healing. These laws, like the laws of physics, are consistent and universal. They describe the way that God releases His power. For instance, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ (Rm 10:17). If you haven’t heard that Christ has carried your infirmities, then you’re going to have troubling believing that He did.

“This is one of God’s laws that many people violate. They want to receive from the Lord, but they don’t spend any time in His Word. They may say, ‘Well I believe that the Bible says somewhere that by His stripes we’re healed, but I’m not sure if that’s an exact quote or not.’” (pp.145-146)

Jesus said you need to exercise your God-given authority and speak to your mountain (Mk 11:23). In a manner of speaking, this is His law for dealing with mountains. You don’t have to understand how that works anymore than you need to understand how electricity works in order to benefit from it. Another law connects faith with action – you need to act on your faith. If you believe that you’re healed, but “continue to think sick, talk sick, and act sick,” then you won’t see the manifestation of your healing.

The laws of the kingdom, like the laws of electricity, have always been there. It’s just that we’re still learning how to apply them. God is not capricious and He loves us just the same whether we get it right or die trying. But His plan has always been for the Church to reveal His “complicated, many-sided wisdom” in accordance with the work He accomplished in Christ Jesus (Eph 3:10-11, AMP). This book makes the wisdom of God plain and easy to understand. When I finished reading I felt like a New Guinean tribesman that had just encountered electricity for the first time. I may not understand everything about healing the sick, but I am definitely inspired to step out in faith and heal the sick. Read this book and you will be inspired too.

One of the greatest tragedies of the modern church is that we’re ignorant of God’s will and His ways. Ignorance is deadly, and that’s why God Wants You Well is such a good book. It illuminates. It provides clear answers to everyday questions. It’s also waffle-free. You can read the entire book in one sitting and you’ll learn plenty. Even if you don’t agree with everything Wommack says, you’ll come away marveling at the potential for life and wholeness that was made available to us through the cross. Jesus didn’t give Himself merely to rescue us from hell in the next life. He also came to rescue us from the evils of the present one.

Grace and peace brother. I was just listening to Max Lucado last night on his program Grace. Max is the most prolific Christian writer in awhile. His program is a simple retreat from the stuffy air that many of us find ourselves in.

I can’t answer your question directly because there are many answers. The good news is all of them are good.

Read around and you’ll find lots of answers here. Don’t give up when God never intended for you to carry this, especially by yourself. A perfect place to start is under the Extras hyper-links (especially the one ‘Frustrated?’) below.

And come back to this page and read some of the other comments posted here. Praying for you.

Henry, you are amazing in the kingdom of God, the word says let every man be a liar but let God be true. So let very experience that doesn’t agree with the word of God be a liar and let Gods word be true always. Our experiences do not determine what is true, it is Gods word that does. Believe Gods word concerning sickness. By his stripes, we were healed.

    • Why did Christ go to the cross?

But He was pierced through for our transgressions (sin), He was crushed for our iniquities (wickedness, sinfullness); The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5, NASB)

Christ died for our sins and paid our sin debt in order that we may be with Him in heaven, our ultimate healing wont take place until we are glorified.

  3. I really enjoyed the article.

I wonder why we die if G-d never wants us to be sick?

I also wonder what specific steps we should take to heal ourselves and other people, through G-d’s power.

And can we apply the same steps to healing animals.

Also, can we heal people ( prayer or in person) even if they don’t come to us or ask for our help?

Grace! That’s awesome. I once resurrect a dead pigeon. It didn’t work but soon after they turned my city into a bird sanctuary.

Great Review, Great Book. Andrew has been one of my favorite Bible teacher

  5. Bought the books, sent him money, listened to the MP3 files, attended one of Andrew’s conferences where he laid hands on my daughter and prayed for her healing. She went home to Jesus less than two months later. When I called his ministry, I was told that my daughter may have wanted to die (FALSE), she may not have had enough faith, she may have had unbelief, I may have had unbelief, I may have not had enough faith, any of us praying for her may have not had enough faith, she may have been in sin. Shameful response coming from anyone who knows the Word. If divine healing for all was available, why do so many believers go Home to Heaven every SINGE DAY?? His teachings on health and prosperity are false. Thankfully the Lord spared me from feeling offended that my child was not healed on this earth. It’s not all about this earth. Once we are born again, we are citizens of Heaven and under the Sovereignty of God. He has a plan for our lives and our lives consist of way more than our time on earth. Word of Faith has a lot of false doctrine in it. It also has a lot of truth which is why it is so dangerous. Who are the richest pastors on earth? Word of Faith pastors. We give our money to them as if it can buy us healing and prosperity. Not true.

Think about it. They make false claims and then when you are in need of HELP after your loved one passes, they must stick to their false claim and blame everything on you.

    • Dear Debbie, I am so sorry for your loss, even though we know where our loved one is, and eternity is forever, it is heart breaking. Thank God He has helped you to not be offended, those words of judgement were very harsh especially at your time of great need. I too have lost a daughter, and blamed myself for not having enough ‘faith’ to please God so that He could give us a miracle. I was listening to Curry Blake and Andrew at the time, and even though I found some things helpful, it also caused me to put the spotlight on me, my faith. I now do not put any credence on my faith, and am trusting that Jesus had faith for me, and am clinging onto Him. I revel in His gift of righteousness to me, that I am His beloved child, and lean heavily on His grace and mercy. The more I keep thinking about what Jesus did for me, the more free and peaceful I become. Hebrews says to be skilled in righteousness, and that’s my aim atm. Bless you Debbie, and we are comforted in knowing our dear ones are with our loving God. Bless you too Paul, this site is so refreshing.

    • Amen Debbie! As a believer, faith is a gift of God, how can it never be enough? It is not the amount of faith that matters but to whom your faith is in, which is Christ who has been given all authority in heaven and earth. The measure will always be enough because God gives it. Placing blame on people by teaching they don’t have enough faith goes against what scripture teaches and is deceiving. It teaches that the Holy Spirit’s gifts are inadequate. Remember the faith of a mustard seed? In addition, your daughter was a blessing from God as God’s word says.

5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6 And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you. (Luke 17:5-6, NASB)

What or who is the source of all genuine faith?
Even the mustard-seed size of faith? It is God. And nothing will be impossible with God.

knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. (James 1:3, NASB)

For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. (Romans 12:3, NASB)

If these false teachers would publically repent they would lose their empires in which they’ve built here on earth. That takes being humble and submissive to God

  6. Hi Paul. I’ve seen a case where someone prays for the sick and they get healed but he himself is battling with sickness in his own life to no avail. What can you say on such a case? Thanks

    • How about have somebody minister and heal the person that is dealing with those issues? Many a times, when trying to receive for oneself, the pain or issue ‘is so real’… that you can’t see far from that. Which wouldn’t be the case for when someone ministers to another person.
      Keep shinning your light!

  7. Since both this verse: Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; (Psalm 103:3, NASB)
    And this one…
‘See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand. (Deuteronomy 32:39, NASB)

are both in scripture, in the Old Testament, how do we assume God wants us well always?

    • It’s not an assumption but a conclusion based on the evidence provided by Jesus – he healed all (100%) who came to him and told us to go and do likewise. Jesus is perfect theology.

  8. If you then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Heavenly Father give you good gifts
According to Greek scholar E W Bullonger,”evil” in this scripture means( from the Greek)
” to have or cause pain”

Has God/Jesus experienced pain?Has HE caused pain?
    Have I caused any pain?
Have I had any pain in my lifetime?

Surely,His soul can identify with us in the experience of this idea……add your views to this
Expand on it…….makes a lot of sense to me

  9. Thankyou for all of the honest responses–we don’t know everything–but if we develop a relationship with Holy Spirit, we can get clarification on many things. Our job is to be a seeker of the Truth. Then we will find it.

  10. Thank you, Sir Paul, for sharing about teachings of Andrew Wommack. I also have his book and follow him on youtube, on Charis Bible College, Andrew Wommack Ministries, Healing School, he is also a blessed man of God! Regarding the “thorn in the flesh”, i also heard talking unbelief many, was clear that Apostle Paul didn’t had problem with his eyes, as many wrong understood, his eyes were healed by Ananias, he healed where he went, i found a very good explanation about this subject “thorn in the flesh” in the book of T.L.Osborn “Healing the sick”. Jesus also healed me when in the natural circumstances was no hope,i am thankful for opening my eyes to the Gospel of Jesus, to all those who teached about this, Andrew Wommack, Audrey Mack, Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Keith More, Kenneth Hagin, T.L.Osborn and i also thank you for sharing about this! This is the Truth, “by his stripes, we were healed”, we receive by faith, not by observing what the symptoms tell us or by what we feel, and we believe and speak faith words. His Name is above all names and our body and mind will submit to His Word. We have to believe, if He said so, means to be obedient to His Words and say “yes” and Amen! We have to keep His Words in front of our eyes, they are medicine for all flesh, we are redeemed from the curse of the law, in the curse were all diseases, Jesus took all our sins and all our diseases, Praise the Lord! What a wonderful God is, may all come to the absolute conviction of His Love and be made whole, in Jesus Name! Thank you, Sir Paul, for bringing the Light, God bless you!
