The Three Nights of Christmas

Pohutukawa by Tepora Watene

It’s that time of the year where we gather with friends and family to celebrate Christmas and to tie a bow on the year that was.

2020 has been an interesting year, as the Chinese would say, and few will be sad to see it end. But even though this was a challenging year, 2020 was not without its highlights:

Many of us spent far more time with our families than we might otherwise have done.

We met our neighbors and discovered corners of our communities we had no idea existed.

We learned how to pivot and attend meetings in our PJs, and we heard a great song.

We learned to be resilient and we also learned that it’s okay not to be okay every single day.

A small gift

Since this Christmas feels different, I’ve been casting about for a special way to mark the occasion.

In the past few days I have written something for my kids to read at the dinner table. It’s the story of Christmas told three ways. It’s rough and I don’t have a better name for it than “The Three Nights of Christmas.” [Link visible to email subscribers only.]

If you have children or grandchildren, you may want to pick one, two, or all three of these readings and read them as a family in the lead-up to the big day. It should be a lot of fun and laughs.

And a big thank you

I want to thank all of you who got my new book The Silent Queen last week. Thanks to you, the book hit the number one new release in a bunch of categories. My heartfelt prayer is that this book will enrich your marriage, strengthen your family, and help your church shine.

You don’t make a lot of money writing books. Not when you give many of them away. That I can write full time while giving away thousands of books each year testifies to the ongoing generosity of those who support me via Donorbox and Patreon. In particular, I would like to thank the following patrons who have shared the journey this year:

    Hi Paul,
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thanks for writing such an awesome book. Your writings are enriching our lives here in Liberia.

Please join me in prayer for a pastor and his family who got in trouble for being excited about grace. We gave him a few of your books and GRACE set him on fire. When his bishop and head office got wind of his grace message, he was warned to stop preaching that God is not holding men’s sins against them. When he refused, he got kicked out of his church this Sunday. They told him that grace leads men into sin. At first, he was tempted to go to court over the church he planted and built. But grace spoke to him to leave everything behind and move on. It is tough on him and his 3 kids. He needs our prayer this Christmas.
    Thanks.

    • It’s a sad state of affairs when a man is forbidden by the church from preaching 2 Cor 5:19. We will definitely pray for this man. Sadly, his experience is not uncommon among those of us who refuse to contaminate the good news with dead works.

  8. Merry Christmas, Paul. You are greatly blessed and a blessing.

Merry Christmas to all, God remains on the throne.

  10. Thanks Paul for your many insights that have challenged my thinking and assumptions which has resulted in a lot of deconstructing for the best. Have a wonderful Christmas and Blessings for 2021.

This is going to be so much fun! My husband is deployed over Christmas this year (and our daughter’s 10th birthday on the 22nd Dec) and we are planning to do these stories together over Skype. Thank you for a fun way for our family to enjoy a different type of Christmas together. Merry Christmas from the Brubaker family.

    • You’re very welcome. Please let me know how it goes, and how the scripts might be improved for next year.

It went great! We really enjoyed the ALL portions which made us all laugh at and with each other! Then on Christmas Day our daughter reenacted it all from memory in a grand finale nativity using various stuffed animals, most of which were pandas 😁 (Except Herod, he didn’t get to be a panda 😆) Thank you for giving us another way to have a Christ centred Christmas.

      • I’m so glad to hear that, thanks for letting me know. We had fun too, but based on our experience with the first reading, I jazzed up the other two to make them noisier and more dramatic. I’ll upload the revised versions and maybe a few others in time for next Christmas.

  12. Hey, Paul! Thanks for this gift : ) I just read the one from the shepherd’s perspective …great for any age : ) Had my parents read these to me , I think I would have understood the gospel much sooner than at 30 lol And I really didn’t begin to understand grace until another 25+ years . You have been such a blessing to me these last 5 years I’ve known you… can’t say that enough : )
Christmas Blessings to you , Camilla and the kid-does !

  13. Hey, Paul. I also wanted to let you know how much I’m enjoying and learning from The Silent Queen. I’m up to Part B Questions and Answers. Just like the topic of grace itself, you have opened my eyes now to see just how badly the church has lost its marching orders from Jesus and Paul regarding the treatment of women and their roles in the bride of Christ. It’s really sad to realize just how much harm people in Jesus’ name have done for so long in their ignorance to grace, to women, to races, and to sexual orientations. But I’m so glad that people like you are revealing the truth to us and hopefully this will have a domino affect and spread like the wildfires we’ve had here in the West U.S. for so many months. The Silent Queen is another winner!

  14. Hey, Paul. I’ll definitely see if I can do that : )

  15. Hey, Paul. I just posted a review on Amazon. It said it could take several days before it appears but we shall see.
So far I only see 6 reviews for it. Maybe there are many in the queue like mine : )

  16. Thanks Don. Merry Christmas to you too.
